Hopkins delivered a strong week highlighted by dominant track and field performances at the Navy Invitational, a three-win surge from baseball and a narrow double-overtime loss for men’s lacrosse against Rutgers.

Welcome back Hopkins faithful to another week of Hopkins Sports in Review! Both men's and women’s track and field competed at the Navy Outdoor Invitational, putting up strong performances. Baseball stayed hot, winning three games in the week, two via mercy rule, while Men’s Lacrosse dropped a heartbreaker to Rutgers in overtime. Here’s everything you need to know about Hopkins sports in the past week:

Men’s Track and Field

The Men’s Track & Field team competed at the Navy Outdoor Invitational on Saturday and racked up 23 top-10 finishes. The Blue Jays had a particularly dominant performance in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Dane Spahr led the way with a first-place finish while four more Blue Jays placed in the top 10. Junior Joey Souverein, sophomore Aakash Iyer, junior Nick Pham and freshman Marco Cunningham finished in fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively. Turning to the sprints, junior Alex Colletti had a standout performance, finishing in 2nd place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.36 seconds. On the field side, senior Ryan Braga etched his name in Hopkins history with a hammer throw of 43.73 meters, the third-best mark in school history.

Women’s Track and Field

On the women’s side, it was even more dominant, as the women’s track and field team totaled 36 first-place finishes. The Blue Jays won two events across the invitational, beginning with the 4x400-meter relay. The team of senior Lianne Saussy, senior Lorna Arcese, freshman Ani Wedemeyer and freshman Gabrielle Moore ran a time of 3:52.44, good enough for the second fastest in DIII this year. Their second victory came in the 5000-meter, courtesy of sophomore Sydney Shock. She was one of six Blue Jays to finish in the top 10 in the event. Other highlights included senior Erika Ezumba’s fifth-place finish in the hammer throw and Carter Brotherton’s sixth-place finish in the 1500 meters.

Both the men’s and women’s Track and Field teams are back in action next weekend at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational hosted by George Mason University.

Baseball: W (19–1), W (3–1), W (13–3)

Blue Jay baseball added three wins this week to bring their record on the season to 19–4. Hopkins began their week on the road with a beating over Lebanon Valley College. The Blue Jays opened the game with a 13-spot in the first inning and didn’t look back. This momentum carried into the weekend and the opening games of Centennial Conference play. Hopkins opened with a home doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall, with whom they split the year before. Game one of the affair was a tense, low-scoring battle, but a controversial double play and a pair of home runs from junior catcher Clay Hartje and senior outfielder Lukas Geer were enough to claim a 3–1 victory. In the nightcap, a handful of early runs by the Diplomats were quickly rendered moot by an offensive onslaught. The Blue Jays tallied 18 hits and 13 runs in the mercy-ruled 7-inning contest.

The Blue Jays have an upcoming game is this Friday, April 3 at home against Gettysburg.

Men’s Lacrosse: L (8–9)

On Sunday, the Blue Jays dropped their second Big Ten matchup of the season in double overtime to Rutgers, bringing Hopkins to 6–3 on the season and an even 1–1 in-conference. The Blue Jays held a slim lead for most of the second half but were forced into overtime in the final moments when a shot by the Scarlet Knights found the back of the net with less than a second on the clock. The two sides were scoreless in the first overtime, but a ricochet rebound shot ended up being the difference in the second overtime as Rutgers managed to steal a game from the Blue Jays. Key performances came from senior goalie Oran Gelinas, who recorded the second-most saves of his career at 19, and senior midfielder Brooke English, who led the scoring for the Blue Jays with two goals.

Men’s Lacrosse returns to Homewood Field next week, where they will host Penn State on Saturday, April 4.
