Another week, another installment of To Watch and Watch For. With many of the semester’s firsts in a series of nightmarish midterms in our rearview mirrors, everyone deserves a moment to breathe and unwind with some of these exciting new media releases. Where to begin? Well, let me tell you about these personal recommendations from each section.
Kick off October right with a horror movie to scare you straight — out of your seat, that is. Bone Lake, releasing on Oct. 3 and directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan, follows one couple’s dream getaway to a mansion, where they’re forced to keep the company of some strange, mysterious couple. To find out how this story spirals downward through horror-filled twists and turns, see Bone Lake in theaters.
Keeping with the horror-branded welcome to October, The Librarians by Sherry Thomas may just be the perfect pick for your next read. How do our innocent, trusted librarians react when two of their patrons turn up dead after their own murder mystery-themed game night? Never say that nothing interesting happens inside a library...
Chances are that even without this helpful compilation of new media releases, you would have found out about Taylor Swift’s newest album, The Life of a Showgirl. Chances also are that even if you don’t set out to listen to this on purpose, you’ll end up hearing it anyway. So why not reclaim some agency and make a point of listening to it on your own terms instead of on the radio and in passing for the foreseeable future?
The ways in which we suffer in our modern era — crises from pandemics to political upheaval and more — are countless. That’s why some of Baltimore’s finest creatives and activists are hosting a therapeutic collage workshop on Oct. 3 to help attendees grapple with the current moment. Do yourself the favor of carving out some time amid the chaos to attend.
As always, don’t forget to complete the blackout by turning to the list below once you’ve finished the personal recommendations above.
