On Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 5:19 p.m, the JHMI bus crashed into buildings on the corner of 25th and North Charles Street. At least nine people, including the driver and several passengers, were hospitalized.
Surveillance video obtained by 11 News showed a white SUV crashing into the side of the shuttle, causing the shuttle to then crash into other vehicles and the side of buildings. The shuttle damaged an office building and part of Yum’s Asian Bistro, according to The Baltimore Banner.
Tow trucks removed the shuttle at around 7 p.m., but vehicles and individuals were rerouted from the area the entire evening. Freshman Linda Huang recalled her experience traveling three hours after the crash in an email to The News-Letter.
“I was on a public bus at 8:30 p.m., and there were still fire trucks blocking Charles Street and 25th Street, so public buses had to detour and come back to 29th Street,” Huang wrote.
In an email to The News-Letter, an undergraduate student involved in the accident shared details about their injuries and the aftermath of the crash. They reported that emergency medical services responded quickly, providing on-site triage based on the severity of passengers’ injuries.
“I split my lip and broke my teeth in the crash. I also bruised my arm, chest, and leg. I am quite shocked and traumatized with memory flashes of the incident,“ they wrote. “I haven’t used the shuttle since then. Figuring out treatment options and insurance information is quite challenging with all my classes and projects work.”
While they have received support from Student Outreach and Support, they are still awaiting information about their medical treatment.
The University has since released a statement regarding the incident’s investigation.
“Last night, a Johns Hopkins shuttle bus was involved in an accident at 25th and North Charles Street. The driver and several passengers were transported to area hospitals, and we are working to identify and reach out to all of the shuttle passengers,“ a University spokesperson stated to The News-Letter. “We are fully cooperating with BPD’s continuing investigation of the accident, and we will update our community as more information becomes available.”
