Hopkins Sports had a record-breaking week, as seven of our teams were in action.

Hi everyone, and welcome to one of our final Hopkins Sports in Review of the academic year! As our spring-season sports wrap up, keep an eye out for championship games and other news.

Women’s Tennis: W (6 – 1)

Our Women’s Tennis athletes got the competition weekend off to a great start with a strong showing against Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Va. In the singles matches, freshman Ava Li and junior Kamila Wong picked up the first wins of the day, besting their opponents with the exact same score and dropping just one game apiece. Later in the day, sophomores Sydney Langer and Sophia Kim, as well as freshman Sahana Sanjeev, picked up three more singles’ wins against Mary Washington athletes. This brought our singles score in the match to 4–1.

Our team also swept the doubles matches, effectively shutting out the opposition. This winning streak was kicked off by freshman Sahana Mandala and Langer, who combined to deny their competitors by 6–2; followed by Li and Wong, who dominated in a 6–3 outcome. The last match of the day capped off Hopkins Tennis' incredible weekend, as junior Jay Xiao and sophomore Lia Melvin secured a 6–4 win, bringing the final score to 6–1.

Men’s Tennis: W (5 – 2)

Men’s Tennis also had a very successful weekend, beating Noº24 ranked Christopher Newport University (CNU). Our athletes made the trip to Newport News, Va., winning five out of six singles’ matches and one of the doubles’ games, for a combined final score of 5–2. This performance allows the Jays to improve to 10–7 on the season!

CNU grabbed the first couple of points in the match, winning two of the doubles’ matches. Hopkins picked up a point in the third doubles’ match, as junior Allen Gong and sophomore Chakor Rajendra won their match with a 6–2 score. In the singles’ games, Hopkins won five out of six matches; first, Gong also bested his opponents in the singles matches, dropping just three games (6–2, 6–1) in total. His victory was the first in an extremely successful Hopkins run — Rajendra capitalized on the moment, pushing Hopkins to a lead in the event after winning his singles’ match. Senior Marco Azar then won his singles match (6–3, 6–3), followed by wins from graduate student Hanyu Liu and senior Zahari Stoimenov.

Overall, our tennis athletes had an amazing weekend. Keep an eye out for their next games, as our spring season winds down!

Women’s Track

The Women’s Track and Field team took on Loyola at the three-day Hopkins/Loyola Invitational. On the field side of the event, the women dominated starting on Friday when junior Erika Ezumba broke her own school-record and earned first place in the hammer throw. Also in the field, freshman Clarissa Newman broke the freshman pole vault record and earned third-place in the event. Shot put also ended successfully, with Ezumba, Phoebe Williams and Kellen Levers Ievers all finishing in the top seven. The throwers continued to sweep the field with four athletes finishing in the top six for javelin where Freshman Claudia Ouimet won first. In jumps, senior Sara Bartlett took first with a jump that marks the ninth-longest nationally, and junior Jaclyn Donoho scored a fourth place finish in the high jump.

The runners also performed strong. In the 1500-meter race, graduate student Annie Huang and junior Emma Kothari nabbed the first and second places, respectively, both beating their own personal records. The 4x400-meter-relay saw Hopkins winning four of the top six spots, and the first place went to the team of Lauren Phillips, Lorna Arcese, Ryan Bigelow and Harrinee Senthilkumar. Hopkins also saw a podium in the steeplechase where sophomore Cameron Coletti won third.

Look out for the women next week at the Penn Relays starting on Thursday in Philadelphia. It should make for an exciting competition!

Men’s Track

The Men’s Track and Field team took on two events this weekend. Joining the women here in Maryland, the majority of athletes competed at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational. However, Hopkins sent junior Emmanuel Leblond to one of the largest collegiate track meets in the country, the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. There, Leblond bested his personal record and the school record in the 5000m.

Back in Md., sophomore Oluwademilade Adeniran broke the school record and placed first in the triple jump. He was joined by second place finisher senior Ethan Oluwole. The jumpers continued to soar as junior Ted Richards won the event. Oluwole also competed in the long-jump where he placed second. For the throwers, senior Ian Raley placed second with the javelin.

On the track, the men raced toward victory. In the 3000m steeplechase, senior Andrew Myers won third. Other athletes racked up top finishes in the 800m dash, the 5000m run, the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles.

The Men's Track and Field team will join the women team next weekend at the Penn Relays.
