APL to work with NASA on probes to lunar poles

By Amy Dusto | January 28, 2009

NASA recently selected the Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL) to be one of seven teams in its newly instated Lunar Science Institute. According to the Institute's Web site, "Competitively selected team investigations will focus on one or more aspects of lunar science investigations of the Moon (including lunar samples), from the Moon and on the Moon." The APL team, led by scientist Ben Bussey, will be looking at the Moon's poles specifically, studying their composition and determining methods of future lunar pole exploration. With four years of research in the works from a $6.9-million grant, the APL scientists should soon be well on their way to achieving these goals.
