Despite faults, VAR will be used in 2018 World Cup

In recent months, discussions about video technology have come to the forefront in the soccer community. In 2016, we saw the first soccer competition use video assistant referee (VAR). VAR is made up of a team of three people, including at least one current or retired referee, that watches replays of important plays and decisions.

W. Lacrosse outplays both Boston and Hofstra

The women’s lacrosse team took care of business this past week with two strong showings on Homewood Field. The friendly confines of the home field proved to be too much for visiting programs, as the Jays were able to beat the Boston University Terriers 18-11 last Wednesday and the Hofstra University Pride 15-6 last Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays took home an impressive win against the sixth-ranked Syracuse Orange.

M. Lacrosse defeats the sixth-ranked Syracuse Orange

In front of a crowd of over 5,000 people, the Blue Jays came up with the upset over the No. 6 Syracuse University Orange. Sophomore attacker Cole Williams led the Blue Jays with four goals and one assist in an 18-7 rout of Syracuse in New York’s Carrier Dome.

Athlete of the Week: Eric Yoo - Men's Tennis

This past weekend, the men’s tennis team traveled to Swarthmore, Pa. to take on the Generals of Washington and Lee University. The Blue Jays entered the matchup ranked 18th in the country and the Generals ranked 31st.

The NCAA does not live up to what it stands for

Within the past couple of weeks, another scandal that the NCAA is all too familiar with reared its head again. A recent FBI investigation into the NCAA and its basketball coaches produced alleged evidence of Arizona University Wildcats coach Sean Miller discussing payment for star freshman forward DeAndre Ayton to land at the school.

Ten Track & Field athletes qualify for NCAAs

This past weekend, the Hopkins track and field team capitalized on their last opportunity of the season to qualify for the NCAAs. A total of 10 individuals will head down to Birmingham, Ala. this Friday to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

This past weekend, the Hopkins baseball team took on Rutgers-Camden and Cortland State in the Baltimore Invitational. Despite a tough 11-2 loss to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, the Jays triumphed the following day against the No. 1 team in the country, the Cortland State Red Dragons.

Saturday afternoon’s 35-mile-per-hour winds weren’t the only thing on Homewood Field that was vicious. The Hopkins women’s lacrosse team took no prisoners as they lit up the scoreboard in a 19-0 thrashing of the Furman University Paladins.

The NBA, as one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States, has come to be of cultural importance to this nation. The League has been experiencing a rise in popularity due to its overabundance of talented players, who often transcend the boundaries of the court.

Baseball splits in a double header to open season

This past weekend, the Hopkins baseball team hosted the St. John Fisher Cardinals in a season-opening doubleheader. The Jays would finish the day with a 1-1 record, defeating St. John Fisher 7-1 in the first game before losing to the Cardinals 10-4 in the second.

Coming off a second-place finish at the Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championship, the Hopkins women’s fencing team travelled up to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Temple Invitational on Saturday, where they faced off against four top-10 teams.

W. Basketball ends season with loss in semifinals

After their comeback victory last Tuesday night against the Ursinus College Bears, the Hopkins women’s basketball team carried their first-round momentum into the next three days of training. Despite fighting mental fatigue and physical injuries throughout the week, the Blue Jays felt prepared going into their matchup against the first-seeded Gettysburg College Bullets Friday night.

Newly-elected U.S. Soccer Federation president will not bring needed change

Six years of progress came to a devastating end when the U.S. Men’s National Team lost 2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago in the final qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup. The team only needed a draw, but their loss, coupled with Panama and Honduras winning their final games, meant that the U.S. will not be going to the World Cup in 2018.
