Leisure

Leisure is the section where we highlight the intriguing, exciting and all-around fun events and activities happening in Baltimore over the weekend.

Light City Baltimore, an illuminating experience

As we look forward to a high of 80 degrees this Friday, I can finally say that the springtime I’ve been preaching as just around the corner for the last 40 articles is actually here. One of the beacons of spring in Baltimore for me, regardless of the weather, is Light City.

Brunching through B’More: Boathouse Canton Edition

When asked to write a column about my weekend, my first thought was that I had little to nothing to write about. My dreams of endless excitement during Senior Spring have largely devolved into evenings spent eating ice cream and watching National Geographic with friends.

A search for the perfect gift(s) in Charm City

I have always had terrible self-control with shopping. This at first seems out of character, because I am also incredibly stingy (prone to taking home the mini shampoos at hotels, attending any event that offers free food — even if I am allergic — and begging my underclassmen friends for their extra dining dollars).

Events in Baltimore this weekend: April 5 - 8

Thursday Carving Out the Commons, Red Emma’s, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Author Amanda Huron speaks about mass evictions and gentrification in Washington, D.C. during the ‘70s and about how residents responded by creating collectively owned and governed urban commons.

Parts & Labor butchery passes the vegetarian test

In my tenure as a writer for Your Weekend, I have often sought out places that most Hopkins students probably haven’t heard of. To me, the point of this section is to get folks acquainted with this wild and wonderful City and to (hopefully) generate some hype about local businesses and events.

There’s more to college weekends than drinking

Spring break: bikinis, tans, college students across the country getting as drunk as possible. Perhaps spring break, now more than ever, is a time when one hears, “I wanna get wasted” or “I can’t wait to black out” with Snapchats, Instagram stories and Facebook photos proudly displaying copious amounts of alcohol.

Events in Baltimore this weekend: March 29 - April 1

Thursday Boh’s & O’s, Mt. Vernon Stable & Saloon, 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. Head to Mount Vernon to celebrate both the Orioles’ Opening Day and Natty Boh’s first new flavor in 30 years, the Crab Shack Shandy. The game starts at 3:05 and Happy Hour begins at 4.

“Laissez les bons temps rouler” here in B’More

I will begin this article by confessing that I have never been to New Orleans. But I have been liking all of my friends’ French Quarter spring break Instas, and I’ve seen The Princess and the Frog at least 15 times. So I feel qualified to speak about Creole food.

Beyond green beer: A St. Patrick's Day Guide

St. Patrick’s Day has to be in my top three technically religious holidays, potentially top two if it’s February and I’m single. So I present to you my guide to getting the most out of my favorite green-tinted American Bacchanal this Saturday in Baltimore.

My journey to the ultimate destination: D.C.’s Wawa

My family has never put much stock in planning out trips. We almost always arrive at our destination barely in time to eat dinner, despite agreeing the night before to arrive at lunchtime. We also like relaxing, so we never create full daily agendas. We just wake up and see where the days take us.

Events in Baltimore this weekend: March 15-18

Thursday Barista vs. Bartender, Ceremony Coffee Roasters, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Kick off Coffee Fest at Ceremony Coffee Roasters’ Harbor Point location. Local bartenders and baristas compete to make the best coffee cocktail. Sales will help support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. $10.

“Indoor camping” provides fun date alternative

“He’s the smartest person I’ve ever met.” “He’s very snarky and sarcastic.” “He’s got a dark sense of humor, pretty pessimistic with his jokes — just a warning. But great guy!” With the above slew of messages blowing up my phone, I nervously texted the aforementioned boy a couple of “creative” first date ideas.

Events in Baltimore this weekend: March 8-11

Thursday HUMBUG: The Great P.T. Barnum Seance, The Peale Center, 8 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Opening night of a performance/seance focused on circus mogul P.T. Barnum, this event features authentic artifacts from the man’s life, including the Fejee Mermaid. $25.

Green Mount Cemetery: more than dead bodies!

As a rule, I try not to encourage general audiences to hang out with a bunch of dead bodies. However, exceptions must be made. Initially, I felt bad about recommending the Green Mount Cemetery as a destination for friends to go to when they need to clear their minds and take a breather.

Look! Crabs! A B'more guide to entertaining your mom

Going into my last semester at Hopkins, I’d like to think that I have the whole “dealing with visiting family members” issue down pat. My mother was in Baltimore for the weekend recently, and I had to take a step back and think about how far I’ve come.

Events in Baltimore this weekend: March 1 - 4

Thursday Water in a Broken Glass, The Senator Theatre, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Based on the novel of the same name by Baltimorean author Odessa Rose, Water in a Broken Glass debuts at The Senator. Dress code is black tie, and there will be a Q&A with the cast and crew after the film. $12.61.

Thrifting spots in Hampden worth visiting

I’ll confess: My idea of a good time usually involves running around campus in search of a place to finish a paper I was supposed to turn in a day ago when all the cubicles on B-level are inevitably full.

Events in Baltimore this weekend: February 22 - 25

Thursday Get Out, The Charles, 9 p.m. A special one-show-only event of Jordan Peele’s horrifying smash hit. Watch the film before it goes off to compete for four Oscars, including  best screenplay and best picture. $11.
