Vice Provost for Student Affairs Rachelle Hernandez and Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement and Dean of Students Brittini Brown visited the SGA meeting and shared updates.

The Student Government Association (SGA) convened for a general body meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Vice Provost for Student Affairs Rachelle Hernandez and Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement and Dean of Students Brittini Brown opened the floor for student updates.

Hernandez explained new policy changes for the year, primarily concerning masking and self-identification. Face coverings for reasons other than illness or religion have been disallowed on university property due to concern for campus safety. Additionally, if a person is prompted by a party, both the party seeking identification and the respondent are now required to self-identify.

Brown and Hernandez continued to discuss upcoming events affecting the student population, including religious accommodations, Student Center food venue openings and operations and the Blue Jay Dialogue Initiative — a new proposed resource to ensure student exposure to essential dialogue tools. These tools include Democracy Day during student orientation as well as the Blue Jay Dialogue Innovation Fund.

During the subsequent moderated caucus, proposals were brought up to discourage studying in the Student Center. Questions then arose regarding sufficient club budgets.

The first reading was introduced by Chair Jazzlyn Fernandez on Registered Student Organization (RSO) Committee Spotlight Fridays. This initiative designated one to two Fridays of each month as “Spotlight Fridays.” During these Fridays, one section of RSO and their respective groups are encouraged to collaborate in creating an event that highlights their section. This initiative aims to promote school spirit and teamwork.

The second reading consisted of item cuts to the National Day of Failure Tabling Funding Bill — such as removing mini microphones and post-it notes) — as well as a discussion of funding and logistics behind the upcoming Fall Rooftop Barbecue.
