Hello everyone, and welcome to another week of Hopkins Sports in Review! It might be midterm season for all Blue Jays, but for fall sports the Centennial Conference season is well underway. Hopkins teams are vying for seeding in conference tournaments as they hope to claim the Centennial Conference crown. Wins by the women’s soccer and field hockey teams were the big stories this week as they both continue to build on already impressive seasons. Here is everything you need to know about Hopkins Sports this past week:
Field Hockey: W (3-0), W (2-0)
Field hockey continues to pile onto a great start to the season with two more wins, including a 3-0 victory over #14 ranked Dickinson. It was domination from the beginning as the Blue Jays controlled every facet of the game. Junior Midfielder Eliza Vander started the scoring in the first quarter and then sophomore Forward Sophia Builione tacked on another to bring the score to 2-0 going into halftime. Finally, it was graduate Midfielder Jenna Halpin who put the nail in the coffin with a penalty stroke goal to push the advantage to 3-0.
The Blue Jays finished the week with another conference victory, this time away at Ursinus. Hopkins jumped ahead in the opening minutes and didn’t look back. Junior Forward Sophia Albano scored in the third minute, while senior Forward Grace Waldeck joined in on the fun with the Blue Jays’ second goal of the contest in the third quarter.
Field hockey is back in action with another Centennial Conference matchup this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Swarthmore.
Women’s Soccer: W (2-0), W (5-0)
After a tough loss to open conference play in mid-September, women’s soccer has bounced back in a big way, rattling off four straight wins, including three conference victories. This week it was non-conference opponent Mary Washington who ran into a red-hot Blue Jays side. Hopkins had a stranglehold on offensive possession, pelting the Mary Washington defense with 19 shots while only allowing five. Sophomore Forward Irene Sanchez Burgueño was the lone goal scorer for the Blue Jays as she tallied a brace, leading the Blue Jays to a 2-0 victory.
Hopkins then welcomed Centennial Conference opponent Bryn Mawr to close out the week. Calling the contest a rout would be an understatement as the Blue Jays piled on five goals without allowing a single shot or corner kick.
Women’s Soccer continues their conference schedule this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Gettysburg before returning home for a matchup against Washington College on Oct. 11.
Men’s Water Polo: W (21-19)
Water polo jumped out to a strong start in their 2025 campaign, with a 11-1 record to open the year before dropping back-to-back matches to #2 ranked Pomona-Pitzer and #18 ranked Brown. However, they bounced back this week with a narrow victory over fellow Maryland-foe Mount St. Mary. Hopkins held the lead throughout the contest but had to fend off a fourth quarter comeback attempt to hold on for a 21-19 victory. The Blue Jays ended the third quarter up 18-10 but allowed nine goals in the final quarter, turning a comfortable win into a nail-biter.
Freshman attacker Mason Hofmann led the charge offensively in the contest, scoring five times and also tacking on two assists. Water Polo’s next game is Oct. 9 when they host George Washington.
Women’s Volleyball: W (3-0), W (3-0)
After a rough loss to end the week, women’s volleyball returned to their dominant ways, picking up two wins in straight sets. The Blue Jays began the week with a 3-0 win over York. The contest was never in question as Hopkins won each set handily with the closest one coming in the third set, which the Blue Jays still won 25-16.
Hopkins opened their Centennial Conference season this week with their match against Bryn Mawr. And it was more of the same as the Blue Jays dominated in every statistical category, including a 42-13 advantage in kills.
Women’s volleyball has two more conference games this upcoming week, beginning at home against Dickinson on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and finishing up on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Ursinus.
