How to pack in style for this spring break

By KATHARINE RUBERY | March 12, 2015

You’ve bought your ticket, attempted to lose five pounds and spent unnecessary money trying to look your best. It’s spring break and, regardless of where you’re going, you have naturally done everything to avoid packing. It’s not that you don’t want to pack — the real problem lies with deciding between your favorite things.

Questions plague the mind regarding “necessity” and “gluttony.” For years, I ignored these warning questions and stuffed my suitcase to the brim. Every hoop earring and every color of heel was included just in case I managed to become a vacation socialite.

Overpacking isn’t the worst dilemma in the world... until you start to shop.

Vacation is dangerous for me (and many fellow fashion lovers) because I always purchase a whole new suitcase worth of clothes in addition to the duffel that I dragged on to the plane. Eventually, I narrowed packing down to a science that efficiently creates cute outfits and leaves room for the unnecessary dresses I will inevitably return with.

First, know what you’re going to wear to travel. I’m sorry, but I am not on board with this “pajamas for flying” generation. I always support looking like a movie star on the plane; you never know who you’ll meet.

An oversized sweater, leggings, riding boots and scarf will keep you comfortable and approachable. Black is a necessity for hiding how absolutely disgusting you are under the chic façade. Always avoid zip-ups, sandals and shirts with brand names. Don’t be the person eating Shipotle in a juicy couture zip-up — it doesn’t make for a great love story.

Regardless of weather, you should always focus on basics that can mix to look new each day. Bring solid colored tops, skirts, two other bottoms and a couple of dresses. Cater this list to your own personal style, but try not to exceed these clothes limitations. A one-week vacation does not require six jumpsuits. Trust me, I’ve tried.

Bring one pair of heels, a pair of cute sneakers, flats and boots or sandals (depending on the weather). Accessories are pivotal to making this drab suitcase appear fabulous. Bring various jewelry, scarves, lipsticks and hats to make the outfit seem more fashion-forward. Always bring your carry-on tote and one chain bag for night-wear. You will buy a new bag, I can promise you that.

The minor spaces leftover in your suitcase are where you tailor your wardrobe. If it is a beach vacation, bring a few bathing suits and your sunglasses. If you’re going to a “cultural experience” (aka cold and all my vacations), bring extra tights and hats. The extra room in your luggage is meant to be practical and define you. Throw in a caftan or a wool floppy hat. Remember that these last few pieces are meant to cinch your muted wardrobe together.

Finally, the last space should be reserved for a stand out formal piece.

If you’re going somewhere warm, a fun colored romper is casual and cute. If you’re going cold, bring a black cocktail dress. Regardless of plans, one should always be prepared for a party.

The best part of vacation is enjoying your time with the people you’re surrounded by. Don’t stress about the packing! Rotate your basics, add some accessories and most importantly, feel passionate about your outfit every day. A black dress with a different lip color and good attitude is far more memorable than conflicting prints and patterns. Staying chic and simple prepares you for the actual adventure: spring break.
