NBA Playoffs off to an interesting start

With one-seeds tied up with eight-seeds and a team owner being banned for life from all NBA activities before his team played Game 4, the 2014 NBA Playoffs have proven to be extraordinary and have shocked basketball fans from across the nation.


Athlete of the Week: Conor Reynolds - Baseball

Freshman shortstop Conor Reynolds is The News-Letter’s Athlete of the Week. He carried a 12-game hit streak into this week, including two three-hit games in the crucial final weekend of the regular season for the Blue Jays that vaulted them into the conference tournament.


Women’s Lacrosse top tenth-ranked Ohio St.

On Saturday, the ninth-ranked Lady Jays defeated the 10th-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State on Homewood Field.  In both teams’ regular season finale, senior attacker Taylor D’Amore became the career leader for assists in helping Hopkins improve to 14-4 overall and 3-3 in the ALC to earn the fifth seed. Ohio State fell to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the ALC, clinching the second seed.



Baseball clinches Conference tournament

“Our approach going into the weekend was that each game was like a playoff game," junior outfielder Chris Casey said. "We had to come out and bring our best level of play in order to show why we belong in the tournament. We had to prove this not only to the other teams in the conference, but to ourselves. We backed ourselves into a corner earlier in the season by losing some critical games, but this past weekend was a great opportunity to dig ourselves out."


Jays reign as top dog in Centennial Conf.

Starting with a sweep over Franklin & Marshall at home, the men’s tennis team has cruised to a remarkable six-match winning streak over the past two weeks. Last weekend, Hopkins hosted Swarthmore on Friday, battling to a 6-3 win, and won both of their matches with ease on Saturday. Their record boosted to 14-4 on the season and 8-0 in the conference.


W. Tennis routs Mules and Eagles

As the season presses on, the women’s tennis team has continued to improve from week to week. On Saturday, the Lady Jays topped Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg as well as 21st ranked Mary Washington. The two wins extended the team’s win streak to six consecutive games.


Bright future ahead for track

The 13th ranked men’s track and field team traveled to Chester, Pa. to compete in the Widener Invitational meet. Many Hopkins athletes had strong performances in this two-day meet to make it a successful weekend for the Jays.


Blue Jay Lacrosse wins pair over Navy, ‘Nova

As the sun was setting on Homewood Field, the seventh-ranked Jays prepared to play their third game in nine days and their last at home. The visiting Villanova Wildcats were all that stood in the way of a potential five-game win streak.


W. Lax falls to Lions, defeats Old Dominion

Seventh-ranked Hopkins women’s lacrosse fell 12-10 to 12th-ranked Penn State on the road on Friday night. The Jays were outscored 8-3 in the second half by the Nittany Lions, who moved to 9-6 on the season and 3-3 in American Lacrosse Conference Action. The Jays fell to 12-3 on the season and 2-3 in the ALC. Seniors Taylor D’Amore and Sammy Cermack collectively totaled 10 points in the losing effort.


Athlete of the Week: Maggie Shelton - Women’s Track

The Hopkins women’s track team had another impressive performance on April 18 at the Larry Ellis Invitational. Blue Jay senior Maggie Shelton had a record-breaking performance on Friday night, further cementing her place in the record books. Shelton finished the 800-meter race with a time of 2:07.29, beating the former Hopkins record set by Annie Monagle with a time of 2:08.73. Along with the Hopkins record, Shelton bested the conference record of Haverford’s Annick Lamar, 2:08.15, that she set back in 2008, securing a spot in the Centennial Conference record books.




Jays beat Swarthmore but fall to Widener

The Blue Jays rode two dynamic pitching performances from sophomore Carter Burns and junior Jacob Enterlin and the thumping bat of sophomore Raul Shah to two victories (8-4, 5-3) against Swarthmore the afternoon of Saturday April 12. Shah was 5-6 on the day with two home runs and three RBI, while Burns and Enterlin combined to hurl 18 strikeouts over 17.0 innings pitched.


Women’s Lacrosse shocks Northwestern

With 20 seconds left in the second overtime, Hopkins sophomore Dene Dimartino scored the winning goal, snapping the fifth-ranked Northwestern Wildcats’ five-game win streak. The Lady Jays are now 11-2 overall in the season, and their ALC record is back to .500 with just two league games to go.


Athlete of the Week: Raul Shah - Baseball

Sophomore third baseman Raul Shah had quite the weekend at the plate, especially in the doubleheader against Swarthmore. Shah was 5-6 at the plate with two homers, leading Hopkins to wins in both games. On the week, Shah hit .611 at the plate with a 1.056 slugging percentage, and was named in D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week. After spending last season as a seldom-used backup, Shah has emerged as one of the key contributors on the team this year. He was kind enough to answer a few questions about his season, his offseason training and the team’s performance thus far.


Women’s Tennis tops Washington College

The Hopkins women’s tennis team beat visiting Washington College in a shut out 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. Currently ranked third, the Lady Jays remain the only unbeaten team in the Centennial Conference. They improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference.


Blue Jays breeze by rival Maryland Terps

A crowd of nearly 10,000 erupted in cheers as the Blue Jays stormed onto Homewood Field last Saturday. The Jays were playing the role of massive underdogs and not-so-gracious hosts.


Men’s Track places 2nd at only home meet

On a day that saw a staggering 17 men’s facility records fall, the Blue Jays’ men’s track and field team placed second at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational. The Blue Jays scored 86 points at the Hopkins/Loyola Track and Field Complex on Saturday. For the second consecutive year, Salisbury won the event with 114 points. Buffalo State finished third with 80 points.
