Over the past week, the women’s basketball team defeated Swarthmore College and Muhlenberg College to improve its record to 20-3. While many had strong performances on both the offensive and defensive ends, the team’s standout player, and our Athlete of the Week, is senior guard Lexie Scholtz.
The men’s basketball team competed in the 18th annual Wall-O’Mahony Game this weekend against the Ursinus College Bears. The game has been held every year to honor the lives of Glen Wall and Matt O’Mahony, who played basketball at Hopkins together in the 1980s and died tragically in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Pitchers and catchers reported to Spring Training this week for all 30 MLB teams. By next week, all rostered players will have reported to either Arizona or Florida for the start of the MLB season, but barring major developments in the next week, there may be some superstars who will still not be on a team.
As the spring semester gets underway, students have plenty reason for excitement. For some it means the start of classes, for some it means one step closer to summer and for some it means the start of lacrosse season. For the No. 23-ranked women’s lacrosse team, it was clearly the latter as the Blue Jays showed off plenty of offensive prowess as they started their 2019 campaign strong against the Drexel University Dragons.
After a hot start, a tumultuous second quarter for the Blue Jays ended all hopes of starting off 2019 on the right foot. The Towson University Tigers used a run of nine unanswered goals to overcome a 4-2 first quarter deficit. The Tigers never looked back in their 17–8 upset of No. 7 Hopkins last Saturday. Blue Jay head coach Dave Pietramala discussed the impact of Towson’s second quarter rally on the team in his postgame press conference.
The ever important trade deadline, the NBA’s unofficial midseason mark, finally came to a head this past week. After weeks of rumors about the future destination of perennial All-Star Anthony Davis, cries of tampering from the New Orleans Pelicans against the Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar LeBron James and questions about what moves the top contenders would make to place themselves in position to make a deep postseason run, it was finally time to lay the cards on the table. This article’s purpose is to highlight the most important moves that occurred before the 3 p.m. deadline.
Both the men’s and the women’s swimming teams traveled down to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Invitational. The Blue Jays proved that they could compete among Division-I competition, as Hopkins earned multiple top-eight finishes and NCAA-qualifying times throughout the course of the three-day meet.
The wrestling team ended the Centennial Conference Competition on Saturday in a series of home meets where they faced Washington and Lee University, Stevens Institute of Technology and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Though the Jays fought hard, competition was tough, as the Jays lost all three matches.
Travelling to Bryn Mawr, Pa. to take on the Bryn Mawr College Owls, the Hopkins women’s basketball team continued its strong season in convincing fashion this past Saturday.
This past Saturday, the Hopkins men’s basketball team traveled up to Allentown, Pa. to face the Muhlenberg Mules in a pivotal Centennial Conference matchup. In their previous battle on Jan. 8, the Mules made their way down to Baltimore and escaped with a four-point victory. After the Jays handled McDaniel College by the score of 70-57, they looked to ride the momentum towards another Conference victory.
Jan. 31 started like a normal day for New York Knicks fans. But about halfway through the day, news broke that their beloved star, Kristaps Porziņģis, was unhappy with the team and wanted to be traded. After approximately one hour of panic and speculation, Porziņģis was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in a deal that involved seven players and two draft picks.
Hopkins track and field dominated the NYC DIII Invitational this past week, as both the men’s and women’s teams finished first in the meet. The men were the best of 27 teams, finishing with 98.5 points, while the second-ranked women finished the best of 24 teams, earning 124 points.
Every Memorial Day, men’s lacrosse comes to a close, and teams turn the page to a new season. New faces come, old faces return and valuable faces leave. The fall and summer become endless, as the anticipation of the first game of the season grows ever larger.
With the Super Bowl now in the rear-view mirror, it is a perfect time to revisit my preseason NFL predictions, some of which were included in a September DanLand column. While some of my predictions were right on the money, others could not have been further off. For the sake of accountability, I have been sure to include both my accurate and inaccurate predictions in this column, along with corresponding grades.

This past weekend, the men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Patriot Games. This event is hosted annually by George Mason University in the George Mason Fieldhouse. The Blue Jays had several impressive performances over the two days.
Hopkins men’s basketball faced two Centennial Conference opponents heading into the weekend. With just a few crucial Conference matches left in the season, all teams came ready to fight to keep or improve their standings.
The race for the season awards is as competitive as ever. At this point, most of the awards could go to any number of players. However, there are frontrunners for each of the trophies. Here are the NBA midseason awards, as of January.
Over the past 29 years, hundreds of student athletes have donned the black and blue of Hopkins football, and more than 50 coaches have paced along the sideline of Homewood Field. Over those almost three decades, there was one constant and that was Jim Margraff, who changed the lives of each and every one of those men that represented Blue Jay football.
Saturday was another successful day for the Blue Jays in Goldfarb Gymnasium. The women’s basketball team defended their home court against the Washington College Shorewomen, defeating them by a score of 50-37. It was a matchup characterized by a staunch defensive effort by the Jays, who neutralized their opponents’ offensive efforts for much of the game.
