NCAA March Madness is all about the numbers

I may or may not have come in last place in my high school’s NCAA tournament bracket pool last year. Either way, it is irrelevant because this year, I placed in the 99th percentile of all ESPN brackets. After some embarrassments in years past, I made sure that this year would be better, and now I’ve won just about every bracket pool I entered, including The News-Letter’s Sports section’s bracket pool. With so many teams competing, many people think it all comes down to luck, but I’m here to tell you that there’s a method to the madness.

Track & Field divides and conquers between three weekend meets

The Hopkins track teams were all over the map this past weekend. Some Blue Jays flew off to Lewisburg, Pa. for Bucknell University’s Bison Outdoor Classic and Emmitsburg, Md. for the Mount Multis, while some stayed home for the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational, as both the men and women produced multiple winners.

Should Kemba Walker stay or should he go?

Last week, I watched what may have been Kemba Walker’s last game in a Charlotte Hornets jersey. Now that he is a free agent, he has to choose whether or not to stay with the city that he has called home for his eight NBA seasons. Nothing could have summed up his eight-year career in purple and teal better than that game. Walker went off, going for 43 points with a 72 percent effective field goal percentage. It was as entertaining as it was dominant, with a slew of aerial acrobatics, mesmerizing handles and a jumper so sweet it would send you straight to the dentist.

M. and W. Tennis go 3-0 in the weekend’s games

This weekend both men’s (No. 25) and women’s (No. 23) tennis competed against Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg College. The men additionally faced a non-Conference opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Both teams emerged from the weekend victorious with impressive scores.

W. Lacrosse loses to two ranked opponents

The Hopkins women’s lacrosse team continued Big Ten Conference play this weekend against the fourth-ranked Northwestern University Wildcats. The game was exciting from the start, but in the second half, Northwestern started to pull away and secure their lead.

The road to the Stanley Cup will be full of excitement and drama

With March Madness wrapping up this week, it’s time for a whole new group of seasonal fans to come off of the hardwood and onto the frozen pond as the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs begin a new iteration this week. Sixteen teams will begin their quest for the greatest prize in hockey, and with new faces and old faces ready to collide, the stage is set for a fun month of springtime hockey.

This past weekend, the men’s track and field team stayed close to Baltimore to compete against Division I competition at the Towson Invitational. Not only did Hopkins perform well against stout competition, they won the entire meet, besting the second place University of Maryland, Baltimore County Golden Retrievers by 12 points.

Freshman attack Joey Epstein had a massive game, recording five goals and three assists.

The Hopkins Blue Jays knocked off the No. 18 Rutgers University Scarlet Knights by a score of 15-13 on Saturday afternoon. A large homecoming crowd was treated to a gorgeous day on Homewood Field and a roaring start by the Jays as Hopkins went on a six-goal run using six different goal-scorers to open up the festivities.

Baseball team splits four games over four days

Back-to-back losses may seem discouraging to most teams, but for the 16th-ranked Hopkins baseball team, the doubleheader sweep Saturday only served as motivation to get back on track. The Blue Jays bounced back from their two losses against the Ursinus College Bears to shut out the Gettysburg College Bullets 15-0 the following day.

The University of Richmond hosted the Fred Hardy invitational this weekend, and the Hopkins men’s and women’s track and field teams had many solid performances over the two-day event. This was the first event of the outdoor track and field season this year.

This past weekend was jam-packed, with both Hopkins tennis teams in action. The men’s team faced off against the third-ranked Emory University Eagles on Sunday, traveling down to Atlanta, Georgia. The women’s tennis team continued their Centennial Conference schedule, hosting the Ursinus College Bears on Saturday.

This past Saturday, the men’s lacrosse team took home a solid Big Ten victory against the University of Michigan Wolverines. The Blue Jays secured the win after a dominating 10-0 run in the second and third quarters, finishing the game 14-8.

Baseball advances record to 14-5 after Florida trip

The Hopkins baseball team travelled down to Fort Myers, Fla. over spring break to compete in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. With nine games in 10 days, almost all the Blue Jays saw time on the field, including several freshmen who made their collegiate debuts. The Jays won five games and lost four, which brings them to 14-5 on the season heading into Conference play.

What comes next with Mike Trout’s mega-deal

Baseball’s best player finally got his payday. This past week, it was announced that centerfielder Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a contract extension. The terms? A record breaking $430 million over 12 years, the largest contract in the history of American professional sports. The announcement comes on the heels of Bryce Harper’s own record-breaking contract, overtaking his deal by $100 million. The massive deal puts Trout in his own echelon, daunting the contracts of Harper, San Diego Padres signee Manny Machado and Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.
