A month into school and Hopkins’ sports teams are still holding strong! Take a deep dive into some teams with stellar performances this past week.

Welcome to another week of Hopkins Sports in Review! By now, we’re in the full swing of the academic year. Things might be busy due to exams, but it’s still the fall sports season and lots of exciting events happened over the past week. From opponents traveling thousands of miles across the world to the games that took place on Homewood Field, the sports teams were full of action.

Women’s Soccer: W (4-0), L (1-2)

The women’s soccer team started the week with a bang on the road at TCNJ. The Blue Jays swept the Lions as four different players scored. The first half of the game saw sophomore Irene Sanchez Burgueno score her second goal of the season, assisted by senior Maria Romo-Nichols. Together, the two have scored three goals over the past two games. During the second half of play, senior Ella Macko knocked the ball into the net off of a corner. Sophomore Carolyn Johnson then brought the lead up to 3-0, soon to be followed by freshman Carolina Chao notching her first ever career goal.

The Blue Jays’ dominant performance from Tuesday was tested last Saturday when they took on Swarthmore at Homewood Field. This was both team’s first intra-conference matchup of the new season. The first half started out with a bang into the net in the thirty-third minute by senior Natalie Smith. Not long after, Swarthmore tied up the game. The Hopkins women battled fiercely but fell in the second half. They kicked a staggering twenty-two shots, with twelve of them on goal, while Swarthmore only had 3 on goal.

Women’s Volleyball: W (3 - 0), W (3 - 0), W (3 - 1)

This past weekend the volleyball team attended the Wid Guisler Invitational. Putting on three spectacular performances, the Jays swept all three matches played. In both the first and second match, the Jays took the three first sets to end the battle.

The opener was against Nazareth, and started relatively evenly matched until Hopkins pulled in front. Senior Helena Swaak served an ace for a victory in the first set. Six different players registered kills. The second set was relatively similar in terms of control of the ball. Graduate student Michela De Marzi delivered both the set winning point and the set-point.

On the second day of play the Blue Jays first faced Christopher Newport. Stars on defense were sophomore libero Nicole Tuszynski and De Marzi. The third game of the tournament and second of the day was against Juniata. The Eagles won the third set, narrowing the lead to 2-1. But Hopkins held firm and volleyed to success in the fourth set.

Football: W (40-22)

The Blue Jay football team went into the game coming off of a two-week high. Football games occur once a week, typically on the weekend, so the players had a while to rest and train – and it paid off in a defeat over #4 Susquehanna.

The River Hawks took an early lead in front of their home crowd in Pennsylvania. After surrendering an opening possesion touchdown, a seven play possession put the Jays on the board. Fierce defending held the River Hawks to their seven points for the first three quarters of the game. At halftime the Jays were on top 17-7, and ended the game with a staggering forty points to Susquehanna’s twenty-two.

Graduate student and quarterback Bay Harvey completed 17-of-24 passes for a total of 258 yards, threw for two touchdowns and rushed seventy yards. On the receiving end, Harvey targeted junior wide receiver Cole Crotty quite often. Crotty acquired 157 yards on six receptions and one touchdown. The run game was dominated by senior Geoff Schroeder, the running back who rushed for three touchdowns. As mentioned before, the defense was on its A-game, sacking the opposing quarterback five times. Sophomore defensive lineman Kevin Olah also intercepted a River Hawk pass.

Men’s Tennis

The Blue Jays opened the fall tennis season at the Joe Hunt Invitational hosted by the Naval Academy. Other local Maryland and Washington D.C. schools were also in attendance. The format of the tournament was matches within a flight, each flight playing round-robin, playing in both singles and doubles. The team of junior Chakor Rajendra and sophomore Brian Yi went 3-0 in doubles. Both also battled to win two out of their three singles matches. Playing with gusto, and not letting his doubles loss get in his head, sophomore Mukundh Boopathi scored a win in all three of his singles matches.

The men’s tennis team will take to the court again this weekend in Virginia for the ITA Southeast Regional championships.
