Black Friday shopping shenanigans

By JESICA DAWSON | November 29, 2012

Like most of the Thanksgivings I’ve experienced at home, which have been relatively lackluster and rather boring, this years’ Thanksgiving was a typical eat and sleep. That is, except for the added bonus of a little garnish of excitement.

Now, imagine it if you can, waking up to someone screaming “fire.”

Usually I just ignore something like that. (Not the most astute thing to do but astute is not something I have ever claimed to be.)

But whenever the word comes in conjunction with the smell of fire, then I usually freak out a little. Just a little.

And this is how I woke up on Thanksgiving morning. My father was screaming “Fire!” which I first ignored until I smelt something burning.

Now, around this time I was thoroughly freaked out and I ran downstairs to see both my father and brother trying to put out the fire in the oven.

My brother was yelling for water and my dad was using a dish towel (not the most effective retardant in the world) to extinguish the flames.

Fear not, for our house was left intact, but the turkey was ever so slightly crisped on the edges and the kitchen floor was covered in a strange mixture of water and turkey grease. And for the rest of the day a light smell of charred turkey wafted through the house.

So that was the high point of my Thanksgiving. The rest of the day was typical: eating, watching the Lions game and sleeping (my favorite part.)

Anyway, you can’t talk about Thanksgiving without mentioning Black Friday. They just kind of go in tandem.

I am not a hard core Black Friday shopper; I like to go at my own leisure and not be rushed. I also don’t buy a lot of stuff on Black Friday. Although one time I bought this awesome forest green winter coat that I love.

Here’s the tradition we have in my family: my mom, my sister, my uncle and I go all shopping together.

We go to Neiman Marcus to buy the yearly Christmas ornament. This year’s is the prettiest one so far! I love it with its silver bag and overflowing bright presents and all the sparkles! Can’t forget the sparkles, now can we?

After Neiman Marcus we usually make our way to Tiffany’s and buy our uncle his Christmas gift, which is always an ornament and then we just peruse the mall, get dinner and make our way back home so we can sit around and talk.

It’s been this way for ages and it’s now a family tradition. (Not the burning turkey though, which was an anomaly… hopefully.)

I had a wonderful time at home in the true blue cold climate. I spent some quality time with my family too.

I hope everyone out there had a great Thanksgiving and a productive Black Friday!
