Understandably, these silent reassurances can’t come from just anyone. A quasi-mandatory parting hug to an acquaintance after a small party does not strike quite the same chord as the leap of emotion into your parents’ arms after a long time apart.

But I do believe that history has pertinence in our lives today. Sometimes. Not really. We’ll see how this goes. Nevertheless, it is damn interesting and entertaining to know the way things were, and we’ll see whether or not they matter at all now.

In reality, almost every little kid wanted to do that. Little girls and boys across the country forced their parents to run to the toy store to buy an Easy-Bake Oven for a holiday, birthday or when they needed a present. Of course, after the usual novelty of a new toy wore off, the oven just sat there with the rest of the things that nobody ever played with, but on occasion, a rush of excitement would come back and you would need to bake in the Easy-Bake Oven. This was simultaneously the best and weirdest toy that children under 10 played with.

These wise words help explain my absence over the past few weeks. Although there has been radio silence from my column across the sea, I swear the fashion has been busier than ever. Fashion Weeks have concluded and I, myself, have been traveling to radically different parts of Europe to really understand the way fashion works. In the past four weeks I’ve been to Paris, Copenhagen, Bordeaux and Florence. In each city the fashion shares similar tendencies but overall, is dramatically different.

There’s the super convenient Daily Grind at Brody Café and in Mudd Hall to complement your long days spent in the library or in the lab. There’s Alkimia in Gilman for your artsy humanities major doing homework in the Hut. There’s the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company in Levering, which is the only one that takes dining dollars, other than good old Char Mar that is. And then you’ve got the classic, Starbucks, which has a star-based rewards system to keep you coming back.

The U.S. Food and Drug Association (FDA) recommends that daily added sugar consumption doesn’t exceed 10 percent of daily caloric intake, and the World Health Organization (WHO) says five percent. These correspond to about 50 grams and 25 grams per day of added sugar, respectively.

Well let’s be real, this is Hopkins so it’s never my week. But somehow I manage to keep it together in front of all my adoring fans and the people who read my columns (i.e., my mom and, like, three of my friends). So how do I do it? Well, dear reader (hi, Mom), I’ll let you in on the well-protected secret to my success: Post-it notes.

If you’ve been experiencing a low mood for a long time or you find that your mood is having an impact on your quality of life, you may want to speak with someone — and that’s perfectly fine! There is absolutely no shame in needing help to get yourself through a rough patch in life, so please do not feel that there is! However, if you are simply looking for ways to boost your daily mood as we move into the colder, darker seasons, I have a few food-related tips I’d like to share.

However, there’s not enough room on the wall for 5,365 undergraduate frames. We need one encompassing mural of love in action and friendliness in contact, unified by smiles and narrowed by ‘hellos.’ Or else, some people will be left out entirely.

I refer to it affectionately as, “Small Talk: College Edition.” You’ve probably been through one of these conversations before too. They start out all innocent with a simple ‘hello,’ possibly an exchanging of names but, inevitably, that one question always arises: “So, what’s your major?”

But what about our future lives? How smart is it to keep health off the list of priorities or off the radar completely?

Not only do they prevent you from total humiliation when you confess your unrequited feelings to someone, but they are also a huge time-saver. After all, who wants to invest tons of energy and time trying to plan the perfect outfit and upload the cutest pictures to social media only to find out there was never a possibility of landing a certain someone in the first place?

Alright, so that’s not exactly what Willy Wonka said. But it might as well have been. He procrastinated for who knows how long before he finally started that golden ticket contest that led him to Charlie Bucket.

But when is the Libertarian debate? What are the polling numbers for the Green Party or Constitution Party? When will third party candidates have the opportunity to introduce themselves to a national audience and promote their views?

With the stress of school and the tendency that college students have toward eating poorly and not sleeping, it’s not surprising that so many of us are falling prey to whatever new strain of the cold virus has been lurking on campus this month. There are ways that we can attempt to protect ourselves, however, and as we move into the cooler months, the need to bolster our immune systems will only grow.

It’s not as though I’d never embarrassed myself before coming here — I run into glass doors like a blind bird on a sunny day — but never before have I been surrounded by so many people who are so much smarter than I am. I spend most of my time with future doctors and engineers, turning those “so what’s your major” conversations into a list of career paths my parents would’ve been proud of.

These lessons arose much to the dread of their sons and daughters who only saw the freedom of that other side. We wished to ride the big roller coaster, to stay up past bedtime to watch the game with Dad, to live as we saw others live. We unsuccessfully fought from the shackles and bottom stair until the winds of time broke down what held us.

Now, you can say I am only using “personal style” as a segue that branches between all things fashion I want to address. While partially true, this really has become something I’ve pondered over the last 14 days. Since my first piece I have settled into my apartment in Paris, started class (albeit three days of it) and tried to immerse myself in French culture. Trips to the monuments were traded for visits to the cinema and people-watching in cafés. The latter is essential to being truly French. For centuries, the French have been flaneurs. Whether in aristocracy or world fairs, they have enjoyed the art of watching others and adopting themselves accordingly. I, myself, noticed this last week while sitting at Le Lithographe Bistrot on Boulevard Raspail.

Zoey 101 was a teen drama/comedy that ran from 2005 to 2008 on Nickelodeon. It followed the life of Zoey, a teenager who just enrolled in a formerly all-male boarding school. The percentage of girls is still very low and the boys who have been enrolled at PCA for years are experiencing culture shock. Zoey along with her younger brother and new friends go on adventures and occasionally get into trouble while looking like they’re having the time of their lives.
