Did you know that Annapolis, Maryland was the first capital of the United States? In fact, the Treaty of Paris — the same treaty that ended the Revolutionary War — was signed in the Senate Chamber of the Maryland State House in Annapolis. The history and significance of this beautiful city were unbeknownst to me until I moved next door. Although Maryland’s capital is just 45 minutes away from Hopkins, many students don’t know what it has to offer. Between the views of the Chesapeake Bay to the delicious seafood available, Annapolis is an amazing place to visit for a mini trip away from school!

The "alt-right" or "alternative right" encompasses a collection of far-right ideologies with strong associations to nativism and populism. The leader of the white supremacist National Policy Institute describes the alt-right movement as one that rejects egalitarianism and advocates for the preservation of traditional Western civilization along with a return to libertarian-style governance. While its origins in the U.S. can be traced back to the 1964 presidential nomination of Barry Goldwater, this distinct strain of conservative thought has deeper historical roots within smaller fringe groups.

The Student Government Association (SGA) held its weekly general body meeting on April 11 to discuss funding for a Blue Jays and Poets Open Mic Night, the Fiji Islander Funding Bill, constitutional and bylaws amendments, the Container Funding Bill and the SGA Inauguration Funding Bill. The Financial Aid Office also gave a presentation to SGA.

The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute (AGHI) hosted the 2023 Richard A. Macksey Lecture featuring Kwame Anthony Appiah, a professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University, on March 9. His talk was titled “Who’s Heritage? Preservation, Possession, and Peoples.” This annual lecture honors the late Professor Richard A. Macksey, co-founder of the Humanities Center that is now the Department of Comparative Thought and Literature.

The Student Government Association (SGA) held its weekly general body meeting on March 7 to discuss the Roast Off Funding Bill, Portrait for Student Memorial Funding Bill, Hopkins Got Talent Funding Bill, Black Caucus Tabling Funding Bill and the SGA Accessibility Standards Bill. They also presented on the Multimedia Art Showcase Report, Crab Fest presentation and Hopthon tabling.

The Foreign Affairs Symposium (FAS) and the International Studies Leadership Council (ISLC) cohosted retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Mark Hertling for a lecture on Ukraine on Feb. 21. This was the second event in this year’s “Paradigm Shift” symposium series.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute kicked off the Elijah E. Cummings Democracy and Freedom Festival with a “Pop the Vote” Baltimore Butterfly Session on Feb. 7. Baltimore Center Stage, the state theater of Maryland and Baltimore's largest active professional theater company, teamed up with SNF Agora to bring a night of art and civic engagement to Hopkins.

The Student Government Association (SGA) held its first general body meeting of the spring semester on Jan. 31. At the meeting, Chief of Staff for the Vice Provost of Student Affairs Lee Hawthorne presented the Office of Student Affairs’ new strategic plan. Representatives provided executive, class and committee reports along with information on supporting the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in the U.S. Supreme Court, the liaison programming bill and Meat the Future Movie Night funding bill.
