International Trendspotter: Spring is back-fashion to match the season

By CARTER BANKER | April 21, 2011

It’s that time of the year again — spring has arrived in Baltimore! And while Spring Fair and the cherry blossoms have already come and gone, you still have a few months left to enjoy the new spring fashion trends for 2011. I have compiled a list of eight major trends of the season to try — be adventurous and have fun!

1) The first trend of spring 2011 is that of African and Native American-esque tribal prints. The bright colors and geometric shapes make a bold statement and look great on t-shirts and rompers paired with jeans and sandals. For a night look, pair a shirt with a tight black or brightly-colored skirt. These looks give you both a bohemian and mod vibe at the same time — a great way to get noticed.

2) Some basics have returned too, namely, floral prints. A key staple to have in your wardrobe is a pale, flower-print blouse or dress to wear on those beautiful days when all you want to do is sit on the beach and watch the shirtless boys play football or Frisbee. Add a pair of oversized sunglasses and you’ve got yourself the perfect combination.

3) The ‘70s are back in 2011. Time to go raid mom’s closet to find the high-waisted pants, printed jumpsuits and bow blouses made of silk or satin. Pair the pants and the blouse together for a very sophisticated retro look appropriate for an interview or a day at the office.

4) Clogs are in fashion again, complete with studs and high heels. This is a great look for those of you who want to add a little height during the day while still remaining casual. I recommend a pair of brown leather ones. FYI, this trend is best tried on days when you don’t have a lot of walking to do.

5) Crochet and lace shirts are always in style, but are particularly popular this spring. They give a romantic feel to any outfit and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

6) Crop tops are also looking strong this season. This is a look that you have to be careful with — it can turn trashy very quickly if not done right. To avoid exposing too much skin, pair a crop top with some high waisted shorts.

7) This spring you can’t go wrong with denim. From shirts to jackets to skirts, light-colored retro denim is in this season. Denim look-a-likes work too!

8) If you’re looking for something new, try sheer maxi dresses. Think of the typical maxi dress but with a sheer bottom. It’s definitely a different look and something to be worn only by the most fashionably courageous women. So if you are tall enough and confident enough, go ahead and rock this edgy look!
