Story Update: City passes tobacco bill

By Laura Muth | October 21, 2009

On Monday, the City Council passed a bill banning the sale of flavored wrapping paper for tobacco. The bill is currently under review by the city law department, according to Joe Yang, Assistant Director of Media Relations for the Mayor's office.

"As I was told from Scott Peterson [the Director of Media Relations]...once the final review has been made by the law department, the bill will be transmitted to the mayor for her signature," he wrote in an email to the News-Letter.

He added that the bill was important to reduce youth smoking rates.

"Flavored tobacco products are appealing to youth and young people and this bill serves as a tool to help reduce tobacco smoking in youth," he wrote.
