Freshman Authorization Senator - Student Council Candidate Statements

October 7, 2004

Abad Mian

I'm Abad Mian and I'm running for Freshman Authorization Senator. You may not know what this position is all about so let me elaborate. I sit on a panel where I get to vote on whether to authorize new student groups on campus. So if you want to start an organization, I'm the person to convince.

Sounds real easy, doesn't it? I won't deny that, but you still want someone who's going to do the right job. I'm open minded and willing to listen to any idea. The variety of clubs out there is pretty limited right now and there's a lot of room for some wacky new ones that can play an important part in keeping our community together. Let's face it, unless it involves free food, most organizations here at Hopkins are pretty dead. If elected Authorization Senator I hope to change all that by approving some great new groups that, while continuing to provide free food, are the kind of organizations you'll want to stick with for all four years.

It is my belief that the most important pre-requisite for this job is an unyielding commitment to Johns Hopkins. Last November I signed the early decision agreement to come here as this was my ideal destination. I know however that I am in the minority, as there are many for whom Hopkins wasn't necessarily the desired ending point. It is for them that I am running. I want to make this the ideal place to go to school both academically and recreationally. I am using the student council as a means to this end, and whether or not I am elected I will pursue this objective.

I have already been working as a member of the Freshman Advisory Board to revise and improve the ways in which the school serves prospective students, while also writing for the News-Letter. I have been a newspaper guy my whole life, writing about the news instead of making it, but now I want a chance to serve my classmates as opposed to simply writing about them. Basically I am steadfastly invested in making the most of college, and that can only happen if everyone is enjoying it. Thank you.
