President - Class of 2007

April 15, 2004

Bo Gu

The essence of the truth is embodied in the will of the spirit.

Six months past the recent freshman elections, the promises upheld by the current student council has yet to bloom into the vivid scenery assured by the board members.

As the rush of spring sheds the disappointing layers of winter, it is time for the student council to don a new and refreshing spirit of rejuvenation in social life and student unity. The monotony of terrace food has driven the class spirit hungry.

The disenchantment of the freshman formal has spellbound the school dazed with disappointment.

The lack of freshman-oriented programs has coerced the freshman to the misery of the dreaded Hut. Where are the once enthusiastic and fervent cheers that commenced the beginnings of the school year?

We have fallen into the bottomless pit created by the discouraging stigmas; which have fixated themselves on our school's reputation.

Yet it is in our power to unlock the shackles impeding the progress of our class.

The potential for change is in your hands on April 18th, 2004 in the form of one syllable.

Gu.??

Sajeda Kermally

Dear Class of 2007,

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce my decision to run for Sophomore Class President. I'd like to be given the chance to make some big changes around campus.

This year I am an RAB Director for the Quality of Life. My duty is to listen to students' complaints, to voice these concerns to their respective authorities, and to GET THINGS DONE.

My platform for President follows suit -- Quality of Life on a larger scale. With your support, my accomplishments through the RAB will increase by at least tenfold and the resulting changes will benefit YOU.

In addition to giving the students a voice, I plan to continue with the last class council's philanthropic ventures as well as publicize events so that we can have a great sophomore year while simultaneously working together for a good cause.

The message is simple: As your president, I want to hear what each and every one of my fellow classmates has to say and make the changes that they want to see.

I hope you will make me your president so that I can work for YOU.

Vote for SAJEDA -- FOR THE STUDENTS, BY THE STUDENTS.

Charles Alwakeel

Hello rising sophomores, my name is Charles Alwakeel and I am running for the post of Class president.? I think that the main challenges we will face next year, as a class, will be social rather and not only academic.?We must be careful not to become hibernating upperclassmen, focusing on nothing but work.?More must be done to get us out.? We are the ones who will set the example for the new incoming freshmen. Were I to be elected, my main focus would be the encouragement of social activities among our class.? Other points I would stress would be the injustice of mandatory meal plans for the McCoy sophomores and the encouragement of undergraduate involvement, this by creating small groups that would not only voice their problems to us, the student government, but rather also outline solutions.?These plans are roughly outlined in this statement, but do not fear approaching me about them as I will happily provide much more detail.? I realize I may not have the solution to everything, but I encourage anyone to come up to me and give me theirs, I am open minded and willing to solve anything I get my hands on.?I hope your are drawn by my ideas, as your vote is essential for them to come true.

Being the incumbant in this year's election, i would first of all like to commend both the students of the freshman class for record numbers in campus involvement and the other freshman class officers that served with me this first year. Even with this year's extreme circumstance with the rattling passage of the new constitution (This took away most power from the previous student council), we have had an extremely successful year, full of events and planning for future years. I have fulfilled my previous promise i had made about holding a Freshman Formal, and the social board even planned an entire week targeted at freshman spirit. I am running for this position for a second year because i feel that i have learned an immense amount this year, and as i now know the system, i would like to continue to serve the students of our class, and at the same time, become a better leader. This first year in student council was a learning experience for me. To show the students that i am dedicated to our class and school, I am already committed to the Fall Festival (which is a new fall version of the Spring Fair) and hope to continue with it all four years. I am involved in numerous other extracurricular activities as well that include Octopodes, volunteering and researching at Johns Hopkins Hospital. By re-electing me as your Class President, i hope to continue my role not just by leading but by serving as well.

Laura Hansell

This December the student body passed a new constitution for Stuco, which drastically altered Stuco's structure. As this year's vice president, my job had been to be the "social chair" of our class- however, under the new constitution, the job of planning social events has been passed to the position of class president. Therefore I am running for class president for the 2004-2005 school year.?

As this year's vice-president, I, along with our class Social Board planned the Halloween Masquerade Ball, study breaks in Q-level and a s'mores night behind AMR I. We designed and organized the selling of our Class of 2007 t-shirts, and we also organized a freshman formal. While all of these events were major successes, I feel the pace of social events must be accelerated for next year.? We've all become well acquainted with each other and our campus- it's time to get to know Baltimore.? My main goal for next year is to sponsor consistent class events downtown, including everything from trips to Camden Yards, to Club Nights, to taking in shows at a downtown comedy club.? In addition, as a member of Stuco, I plan to, as always, represent the will of our class.? Please remember me, Laura Hansell, on election day.
