As Women’s History Month comes to a close, I want to celebrate the many sportswomen who fearlessly break down barriers for women and girls around the world. The striking disparities at the NCAA Division-I Basketball Tournament this past weekend are a painful yet unsurprising reminder of the ongoing fight against gender inequality in all levels of athletic competition.

Entertaining and unforced, the All-Star Celebrity Game features famous personalities who surprise fans with their athletic abilities. The Rising Stars Challenge displays the future superstars of the league, and the NBA All-Star Game is the main event for obvious reasons.
It is March, and for many sports fans that means one thing: college basketball. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, often referred to as March Madness, is one of the most anticipated sports events of the year, and it has finally arrived. Due to COVID-19, the entire tournament will be held in Indiana with most games taking place in Indianapolis. Games begin March 18, and the tournament will run until April 5, when the championship game will be held.
In a press release from the Centennial Conference on March 5, the Presidents Council announced its plans for the return of sports such as baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field and more. For the first time in almost a year, teams are getting back on their respective fields and courts to participate in varsity sports.
It is the job of the media to stir up controversy, make assumptions or pressure athletes for answers about their future plans, but at least in the case of Tiger Woods — they should stop.

The women’s lacrosse team headed to Columbus, Ohio to play a pair of games against the 24th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes over the weekend. After starting the season 0-3, the Blue Jays were desperate for a victory. Both games were incredibly close, ending by a margin of just a single point.
The men’s lacrosse team took on the University of Maryland Terrapins on March 6. The game started off fairly even, and then the Terrapins broke loose in the third quarter, scoring nine unanswered goals through early into the fourth quarter.
After a year without competition, men’s and women’s fencing returned last weekend.

It is an amazingly unique position to be in as a former player, and it is also a symbol of how the NBA is incredibly player-centered.

After nearly a year, the Hopkins men’s lacrosse team was finally able to return to playing Big Ten games on Homewood Field. On Saturday, the team faced off against the Ohio State University Buckeyes. The Blue Jays were expecting a challenge, as the Buckeyes are currently ranked 10th in the nation while Hopkins is ranked 20th. Additionally, this was the debut of new head coach Peter Milliman after the departure of Dave Pietramala in April of last year.
The women’s lacrosse team waited for almost a full calendar year to take the field once again for legitimate competition. Weeks and weeks of social distancing and constant preparation through scrimmages and workouts culminated in a Big 10 matchup against the visiting Rutgers University Scarlet Knights at Homewood Field.
Director of Athletics and Recreation Jennifer S. Baker and Director of Recreation and Facilities Bill Harrington wrote in an email to students on Feb. 1 that the Recreation (Rec) Center would remain closed in light of a recent COVID-19 cluster.
