Welcome back to school, welcome back to DanLand, welcome back to football! After a seven-month hiatus filled with talk of rookie quarterbacks, player holdouts and massive contracts, Week 1 of the NFL season has finally arrived. As always, the season will be filled with contenders, pretenders, streaks, slumps and plenty of surprises. To that end, let’s tackle four of the most deliberated questions that lack clear-cut answers but will be extensively discussed as the season unfolds.

The women’s lacrosse team secured a valuable Conference victory this past Saturday against the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights. In their final regular season game, the Blue Jays picked up a 16-11 win on the road and clinched the final spot in the Big Ten Tournament. The Jays’ victory was powered by a dazzling offensive performance, led by sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Heldberg, who finished the game with a team high of six goals.

With the postseason quickly approaching, the Hopkins women’s tennis team is buckling down for the home stretch of their regular season play. The team has caught fire in recent weeks and currently holds an 8-2 record in the month of April.

The Hopkins baseball team wrapped up another strong week, improving their Conference record to 9-2 through 11 games. The Blue Jays — who entered the week riding an eight-game winning streak — played three games, including a road doubleheader against the Haverford College Fords on Saturday and a home game against the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats on Tuesday.

It was a jam-packed week for the Hopkins men’s tennis team, which competed in five matches over the course of three days. The Blue Jays took on the McDaniel College Green Terror and the North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops on April 5; the Gettysburg College Bullets on April 6; and the Muhlenberg College Mules and the Christopher Newport University Captains on April 7.

Conference play is officially underway for the Hopkins baseball team. On Saturday, March 31 the Jays took on the Swarthmore College Garnet in a doubleheader. They then returned to Babb Field on Tuesday for the first of what will be a two-game home-and-home series with the McDaniel College Green Terror.

Don’t look now, but the Hopkins men’s lacrosse team is scorching hot. The team finished off its non-Conference schedule in style, defeating the University of Delaware Blue Hens and the University of Virginia Cavaliers on its way to capping off a perfect 5-0 month of March.

It was another weekend of ups and downs for the Blue Jays at Babb Field. Playing two games in two days, the Jays took on the Manhattanville College Valiants on Saturday and the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks on Sunday.

In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics are rolling behind the efforts of Kyrie Irving, while the Cleveland Cavaliers are beginning to gain some momentum and ascend the standings. Out West, the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs are off to fast starts and look to once again be the Conference’s three elite teams.

In the NFC especially, the presumed juggernauts have fallen flat. Of the six teams from the Conference that made the playoffs last year, only two would qualify this year, and zero currently lead their division.
