Men’s Tennis finishes 2nd at ITA

The Hopkins men’s tennis team was busy at work this past weekend, taking on several formidable opponents. During their numerous matches, the Jays were able to accomplish a feat that many take for granted: making our school proud.  The 10th ranked Jays traveled to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Cleveland, Ohio and came away with a result that was not only rewarding, but one that left them hungry and prepared to take their games to the next level.

Lady Jays close out Wash. College in OT

On Feb. 22, the Hopkins Lady Jays travelled to Chestertown, Md. for their regular season finale against the Washington College Shorewomen. The first half of the basketball game did not go as planned for Hopkins, as the team was behind 27-25 at the half, never once holding the lead.  Still, Hopkins fought back in the second half, quickly taking the lead on back-to-back shots by sophomore guards Katie Clark and Liz Tommasi, putting Hopkins up 30-27 with 18:39 left in the game. The lead, however, was short lived as the Shorewomen quickly regained the lead 31-30.

Men’s Basketball tops Washington College

The Hopkins men’s basketball team won their last game of the regular season in a close game against Washington College. The Jays improved to 15-10 overall and 12-6 in the Centennial Conference. In Head Coach Bill Nelson’s 550th career game, the team secured a first round bye in next week’s Centennial Conference Tournament.

Women’s Lacrosse jumps out to 3-0 start

The Hopkins women’s lacrosse team has been tough to stop in February. Through the first two games of the month, the Jays have averaged a whopping 16.5 goals per game en route to a 2-0 record. This past Saturday, the Jays returned to Homewood Field after defeating Mount Saint Mary’s University 17-2 in Emmitsburg, Md. last Wednesday to play a winless Bucknell team in the hopes of starting the young season with an impressive 3-0 record. This game started a critical four-game home stand for a Hopkins team that hopes to make it back to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time since 2007.

Athlete of the Week: Andrew Bartnett - Men’s Track

After another stellar all-around performance, the Hopkins men’s track team looks prepared heading into the Centennial Conference playoffs this weekend. Last weekend, the Jays traveled to Haverford, Pa. to take on several rival schools in the Keogh Invitational, the last meet to train and qualify for conferences. While the day was filled with several memorable moments of play, the record-shattering performance from freshman Andrew Bartnett stood out. Bartnett was spectacular as he broke his previous pole vault record of 4.65 meters with a jump of 4.70 meters to not only finish first overall in the event, but also to top the previous Hopkins freshman record. As a result of his achievement, Bartnett was named the Centennial Conference Field Athlete of the Week. Bartnett was the third Jay to receive this honor during the season. For his recent success and his record-breaking performance at the Keogh Invitational, Bartnett was awarded the honor of Athlete of the Week by The News-Letter. We were able to catch up with the freshman star and ask him a few questions about the Conference playoffs, his personal goals, and the goals of the team moving forward.

W. Track concludes season on high note

The end of the regular season proved to be a strong one for the Hopkins women’s track and field team. Coming off of a very strong performance at the United States Naval Academy last weekend, the Lady Jays found themselves in Haverford, Pa. to conclude their indoor regular season at the Keogh Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Women’s Swimming dominates the pool

The Hopkins women’s swim team took third place at the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship, accumulating 1245.5 points during the three-day event. The Lady Jays made the trip down to Charlotte, N.C. to compete against some of the better Division III schools in the region. Given the fierce competition, the Lady Jays performed incredibly well, setting numerous individual, team and school program records. Junior Ana Bogdanovski led the way for the Jays with three individual titles, earning herself a share of the record for most individual titles in one championship meet. Bogdanovski grabbed an impressive win in the 100m Free on the last night of the meet, to go along with victories in the 50m and 200m Free.

Women’s Lax cruises by Golden Eagles 16-2

On Feb. 15, the Hopkins Lady Jays cruised to a blowout 16-2 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles in the season opener on a cold and snowy morning at Homewood Field. Despite the large margin of victory, it was Marquette that jumped to an early 1-0 lead, after capitalizing on failed clear. The Lady Jays did not let this discourage them, quickly answering with four unanswered goals with the first being a free position strike from Sophomore Jenna Reifler, who just 50 seconds later, assisted on a tough-angle goal by Senior Taylor D’Amore from the left goal line. Sophomore Dene DiMartino then scored Hopkins’ third goal in 2:26, and D’Amore later assisted Junior Jen Cook to put the Lady Jays up 4-1.

Hopkins captures bronze in Charlotte, N.C.

The Hopkins men’s swimming team is known for the prestige surrounding the program. Just like all Hopkins sports, the men’s swimmers are athletes that are known nationally as a force to be reckoned with. This past weekend, they made that very clear in Charlotte, N.C., where both the men's and women's teams competed in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships. The team has only dropped one match since the start of the calendar year, which happened earlier in the season against the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy.

Blue Jays Storm Past Tigers at Homewood

On a cold, blustery Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field, the 11th-ranked Hopkins men’s lacrosse team streaked past fellow Maryland rival Towson by a final score of 15-8. The win marked the second win of the season for the Jays to keep them undefeated and 62-8 all-time against teams from Maryland under head coach Dave Pietramala. While the mighty Jays got off to a slow start throughout the first half, a seven goal surge in the third quarter put the Tigers behind for good.

Athlete of the Week: Katie Clark - Women's Basketball

The Hopkins women’s basketball team has had a very successful season, currently holding a record of 16-6 with only two games left in the regular season. Last Wednesday, sophomore Katie Clark helped to secure the team another win. She had a career day, finishing with her highest amount of points, rebounds and assists in a single game in her college career. She helped lead the Lady Jays to a 61-55 victory in a close game against Gettysburg after coming back from an injury. For her performance last week, The News-Letter is proud to announce Katie as our selection for Athlete of the Week.

M. Basketball falls to Red Devils by 5

The Hopkins men’s basketball team went into last weekend looking to continue their undefeated streak at home that began with the New Year. Although the team has played well on the road as well, they feel more comfortable in their home gym and love having the fans there to support them.

Column: Has LeBron’s Reign as King Ended?

Has LeBron James’ reign as number one in the league come to an end at the hands of a 6’9 shooting guard from the Oklahoma City Thunder? Okay so he’s listed as a forward, but anyone who watches the game would call Kevin Durant a shooting guard. Averaging 31.5 points per game on 51 percent shooting, KD has proven his name to belong with the greats, but does he deserve the label of number one?

Men’s and Women’s Fencing both prevail

Following the team’s fifth straight team EWFC Championship last weekend, the women’s fencing team returned to action in the EWFC Individuals Tournament this past weekend in Hoboken, N.J. Unlike the team event where universities were pitted against each other, this time around each fencer would be representing themselves in pursuit of individual titles.

M. Basketball holds off Swarthmore rally

In what was sure to be one of the most competitive games of the season, the Hopkins men’s basketball team welcomed the Swarthmore Garnet into Goldfarb Gym on Saturday afternoon, as the two teams got ready to face off for the second time this season. In the first matchup between these Centennial Conference rivals earlier in January, the Jays cruised to an impressive 76-47 rout of Swarthmore in front of the Garnet’s home crowd. However, the second time around proved to be a much tougher test for the Blue Jays, as they were able to slip past the resilient Swarthmore squad for a 60-53 win. Hopkins improved to 13-8 on the season with a record of 10-4 in conference play. As a result of this critical win, the Blue Jays maintained third place in the Centennial Conference standings.
