The Hopkins Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams participated in Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational this past weekend. The competitive field was filled with numerous D-I teams such as the Georgetown University Hoyas, Yale University Bulldogs, Boston College Eagles and many more. Both teams took advantage of the strong competition and ran some of the fastest times posted in the Centennial Conference this season.
On Saturday afternoon, the Hopkins Men’s Basketball team hosted their 15th annual Wall-O’Mahoney Game when they took on the Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
The No. 17 Hopkins Women’s Lacrosse team opened the season with a milestone 11-8 victory against the Marquette University Golden Eagles at home this past Friday. The win was the 400th in program history, and the 250th in Head Coach Janine Tucker’s career. The result puts Hopkins at 1-0 to start the season, while causing Marquette to fall to 0-2.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, the Hopkins wrestling team had a memorable showing at the Centennial Championships at McDaniel College.
The end of the NFL season has been headlined by the remarkable run by the Denver Broncos and the uncertain future of their legendary, surefire first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback, Peyton Manning, who has made 40 look like the new 30.
It isn’t even over yet, but this season of Premier League football has been the wildest since the inception of the league in 1992. On Feb. 11, 2015, the Leicester City Foxes was in last place before finishing the season on a “hot streak” to avoid relegation and earn a 14th-place finish. At the time of writing, the Foxes occupy the top spot on the table by five points (over perennial contender the Arsenal Gunners and the always borderline Tottenham Hotspur “Spurs” — more on them later). Towards the bottom of the table, there’s Chelsea in 13th. The defending champions have been unable to right the ship after a rocky start and now face a year without any European competitions. In what has been a crazy season, The News-Letter names its top five things to look out for in the rest of the year.
Sam Gordon is this week’s Athlete of the Week. He is a senior starter on the men’s basketball team and is having a great season so far. He kindly agreed to answer a few questions for The News-Letter.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, the Lady Jays took on the Bryn Mawr College Owls in another non-Conference matchup.
The Hopkins men’s lacrosse team took part in two scrimmages these past two weekends, first travelling to the University of Denver to scrimmage against the defending world champion Pioneers and then making the short trip down the Beltway to Washington, D.C. to play the Georgetown University Hoyas.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 7, the Hopkins men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams made the two hour trek to Collegeville, Pa. for the Frank Colden Invitational.
This past weekend, the Hopkins men’s basketball team travelled to Allentown, Pa. to take on the Muhlenberg College Mules in a pivotal Centennial Conference tilt. In a wild, back-and-forth affair, the Mules ultimately prevailed over the Jays by a score of 58-53.
Hopkins wrestling ended its regular season on Saturday with home duals against Centennial Conference rivals Muhlenberg and Ursinus Colleges. The Blue Jays split the record in these matchups, with a 38-3 victory against Muhlenberg followed by a 36-6 loss to Ursinus.
On Saturday, Jan. 30 the Hopkins men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed in the Terrapin Indoor Invitational.
Coming into the season, expectations for the Hopkins men’s basketball team were incredibly high.
This past weekend, the Hopkins wrestling team participated in a back-to-back-to-back triple-header, with three matches against different teams. On Jan. 19, the Blue Jays took on the Washington & Lee University Generals (40-14) and came out victorious at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.
The performance of Caroline Smith, a sophomore distance runner on the track and cross-country teams, merits her selection as this week’s Athlete of the Week. Since August, Smith has been competing against and besting fields filled with Division I competitors.
Last Wednesday, after the original meet was postponed due to inclement weather, the Hopkins men’s and women’s swim teams took part in a meet against Towson University and Navy in Annapolis.
For a weekend scrimmage against Denver University, Hopkins men’s lacrosse traveled to Colorado this weekend, where they were defeated 14-10 by the defending national champions.
