PILOT, the academic support program offered to students to work on problem sets in groups, will be introducing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to a number of sessions in mid-October. This development follows a number of announcements on Hopkins’s goal to find a place for AI in education.
Last month, faculty, staff and students moved into the Hopkins Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation (the Bloomberg Center) in D.C., which will serve as the new home of the University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The 10-story steel and glass building features 38 classrooms, multi-purpose study lounges, a public art gallery and a 375-seat theater.
Over 2,000 students gathered to explore the opportunities of over 100 employers at the fourth annual Future Fest Career Fair on Friday, Sept. 15. The event — held in the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center (Rec Center) — was part of the Life Design Lab’s Future Fest, which intends to connect Hopkins students with employers, graduate schools and alumni.
Hopkins fell from seventh to ninth in this year’s U.S. News & World Report Best National University Rankings, published on Monday, Sept. 18. Currently tied with Brown University and Northwestern University at ninth place, Hopkins was previously tied with the University of Pennsylvania for seventh place. Prior to last year, Hopkins was ranked ninth for two consecutive years.
The Program in Racism, Immigration and Citizenship (RIC) hosted its annual Fall Kick-Off Event and Reception on Sept. 14. The panel provided an opportunity to discuss the work of RIC research fellows and the importance of historical exploration in light of affirmative action’s termination.
The Committee on Student Elections announced the winners of the freshman Student Government Association (SGA) race on the evening of Sept. 14. The eight seats up for election were filled by Vishnu Dontu as freshman class president, Omotara Tiamiyu, Arihant Singh, Jaden Williams and Tarini Basireddy as freshman class senators and John Cintron, Jazzlyn Fernandez and Joshua Brown as the Freshman Programming Council members.
The Johns Hopkins Dragon Boat Club is a competitive club for the crew-like, 22-person sport of dragon boating. The club won its first division race at the Catholic Charities Dragon Boat Festival in Inner Harbor on Sept. 9, coming fourth out of sixteen overall.

Katie Carey is the university archivist within the University’s Special Collections of The Sheridan Libraries. Carey manages the institution’s records management program as well as a team of archivists that processes collections in the University archives and special collections. In an interview with The News-Letter, Carey discussed the role of the archives within the University and why she became an archivist.

Last spring, Hopkins released details for its optional Pre-Orientation (Pre-O) program offerings as the Class of 2027 prepared to embark on their college journey. While most program choices were similar to prior years, the previously free programs now came with a cost of $250 (excepting those for scholar-selected students, which remained free). The outdoor Pre-O program, made up of multiple outdoor trips, was canceled altogether.

The Student Government Association (SGA) held its first weekly general body meeting of the year on August 29 to discuss the Board of Trustees Resolution, the Barbie At The Beach (BATB) Funding Bill, Spring 2023 Bylaws Updates and the Caucus Constitution Amendment.
The 2023–2024 academic year has added new services for the student body. Hopkins Dining and Transportation Services announced changes to their operations that have elicited positive responses from students as well as constructive feedback.
The University is mourning the loss of Amir Modaressanavi, who passed away on Sunday, July 16. He was a junior studying Computer Science at the Whiting School of Engineering. Modaressanavi was a member of the Table Tennis Club, Tennis Club, Students for Environmental Action, Economics Club and the Johns Hopkins Film Society.
In light of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruling against consideration of racial background in the college admissions process, the University sent a broadcast email to the Hopkins community on June 29. The broadcast denounced the ruling and affirmed the University’s continued commitment to diversity.
In an interview with The News-Letter on May 11, University President Ronald J. Daniels discussed the development of the Ten for One strategic plan, the role of affirmative action at Hopkins, the University’s new campus in D.C. and the institution’s commitment to data science and artificial intelligence research.
Futurism at JHU runs a podcast discussing billion-dollar ideas in science and technology. Since the launch of the podcast in the fall of 2021, Futurism has recorded 24 episodes on topics from artificial intelligence and neural networks to digital healthcare and, most recently, ChatGPT.
The University held its 52nd Annual Spring Fair from April 27 to April 30. This year’s Spring Fair, following the precedent set by the previous two years, was planned by the Office of Leadership Engagement and Experiential Development (LEED) in collaboration with Hopkins Student Organization for Programming (HOP).
The Brazilian Students Organization (BRASA) hosted Dr. Filipe Campante, a Bloomberg distinguished professor at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and the Carey Business School, on April 26 for a discussion on the political and economic implications of the October 2022 presidential election in Brazil.
