After barreling through 20 years to reach that infamous title of adulthood, college students alike cross that impasse and inevitably yearn for the "better days." Days when all-out birthday parties at Chucky Cheese ruled the evenings, and weekends consisted of pajama-wearing movie-showing sleepovers. And the unthinkable becomes the actual -- we knew how to party better when we still had a 9 p.m. curfew.

In the past two weeks, Hopkins security has reported an armed robbery of Royal Farms, attacks of two students walking on N. Charles St. and continued indecent exposures incidents in close proximity with Homewood campus.

Nisha Agrawal wasn't quite prepared for the adjustment of a semester in Barcelona, and the diagram presented by the International Education of Students Center to the students upon arriving detailing the feelings she would go through didn't help.

Hopkins has always been known more for its undergraduate research opportunities or academic rigor, rather than its student life. Aside from the freshman-oriented S.A.C. fair that took place last week, the perception of student groups is limited to after-school study sessions and the occasional cultural organization.

"Start now" seems to be the catch phrase for freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors alike when it comes to internships. Previous work experience, difficult class schedules and summer vacations aside, students are jumping on the internship bandwagon at an increasing rate, and catapulting into career fields before textbooks are cracked open.

You spend the entire semester dreading them, crying in miserable anticipation. You figure out your grades over and over again, realizing that one test could ruin three months worth of work. Are finals really the terror that they're made out to be? Well, actually, yes. It would be hard to find someone who actually enjoys them, but there are ways to keep finals studying and worrying under control. Here are some tips for both college newcomers and fourth-year pros.

It's the first week of school, and the bad news is, it's only going to get worse. The library will oddly become a source of enjoyment and terror, study nights will turn into wretched all-encompassing study weekends, and that social life you thought you had will seem farther and farther away...

The lights of New York's theater industry are still shining. After America galloped into a second war with Iraq, Broadway was hit with another blow to attendance and sales. But after the combined effects of Sept. 11, the recent four-day strike sales dropped since the beginning of the war, with many productions cutting back spending or canceling production altogether. According to a study done by the Associated Press, the box-office receipts during the second week of the war fell from $12.9 million to $12.5 million in a single week. The New York Times also reported that nine commercial Broadway shows have closed during the year due to decreased sales.

When the dining hall's butter drowned vegetables almost drive you to swear off food altogether, you know it's time to take the initia-tive to look beyond the Homewood Campus walls. With organic food stores popping up left and right, vegetarian-focused restaurants throwing "Yes, We're Open" signs on every other street corner and community groups begging you to join in on the trend, the meat-eaters and meat-defeaters alike can coexist in Baltimore, and better yet, on and around Hopkins campus.

After taking numerous classes in biophysics, organic chemistry, foreign policy and writing seminars, who wouldn't want to take a fun class? Of course, the classes for our majors are supposed to be a joy to take, but what joy do many of us participate in to get away from classes? Drinking! Why not combine the two wonderful aspects of life at Hopkins into one? The perfect fusion of both - classes in bartending. Surprisingly enough, there are two organizations that offer these classes in the Baltimore area. You can learn enough to throw a kick-ass party, or you can pursue a job in bartending after only a few weeks of training.

What is college known for? An opportunity for a fine-tuned education, of course! But aside from that . aside from the education intellect mind-expanding crap, college is known for, come on, all together now, DRINKING! And Hopkins is definitely included in that stereotype. Actually, I think it's a wonder why people haven't started drinking in the library yet.

Johns Hopkins has been known for years as one of the most diverse college campuses in the United States. The student body is proclaimed to include not only men and women from a wide range of states, but also students from numerous foreign countries to study at the esteemed institution. As nice as it is claimed to be in the guidebooks and visitor information packets, many students feel that Hopkins isn't really diverse at all.

It's a club that we've all been to. It's a club where most of us have had beer spilled down our backs. It's a club where you will most definitely leave having had at least one totally sketchy guy hit on you (if you're a girl). Then again, that's a reality at all clubs. As far as the Baltimore scene goes, Bar Baltimore is one of the better clubs and definitely one to check out, even if you decide not to return.

We all have our own opinions as to the best movies that have ever been produced. There are tons of charts and lists of the movies that have been polled to be the classics of all audiences, and the movies that have grossed the most in the theater. I, however, do not base my eight best movies on these charts, because then I would have to include Titanic, which is possibly the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. Call me crazy, or call me uneducated on the criteria of an outstanding, unforgettable movie, but I'm sure all of you will agree with me on at least one of my choices. If not, well, I think you should seriously reconsider. Here goes, in no particular order, simply because my favorite depends on what mood I'm in:

I was relaxing during the past holiday weekend, kicking back and trying to keep up a conversation while inhaling as much food as I possibly could (after three months of dorm food, wouldn't you too?) and it came to my attention that we are nearing the end of November. Do you know what that means? Christmas is right around the corner. The splendid day is less than a month away. (Yes, take a deep breath, let it sink in. I can hear the "Oh Shit!" ringing throughout the campus.) The wonderful mass commune to the malls has already begun. Me being exceedingly lazy and avoiding lines that are longer than ones I would wait in for Michael Jackson tickets, I have not purchased a single present. That means there are about 28 days left. Let's see what Hopkins has on the agenda.

Does money run your life? Do you find yourself balancing your checkbook more often than you get a full night's rest? Does it seem as though every time you write a check, you're signing away part of your soul? Money has become an integral part of our lives whether we like it or not. Ever since the end of the barter economy, money has become our only form of trade, and if we're going to constantly have that reality shoved in our faces, we might as well shove back!

Looking for a way to get involved in service? Scared that you lost all opportunity after the SAC fair at the beginning of the year? Are you interested in how you can help show other countries that in the midst of our national struggle, we are still a country geared towards helping those in need from all over the world? There is an amazing program that is in need of volunteers. It is called Heads Up! : An Enrichment Program for Refugee Youth.
