May 26th, 2008 may always be remebered by Hopkins men’s lacrosse players, fans and the like, but some may want to forget how close the Jays came to history. The fifth-seeded Blue Jays entered the National Championship game riding an eight game winning streak, which included playoff wins over Navy and top-seeded Duke.

Even before the Hopkins women’s tennis team went 3-1 this week, their lone loss coming against Division I foe Delaware, the Jays were ranked ninth in the latest national poll, their highest national ranking in two years thanks to a 10-1 record at the time.

Although not entirely busy over spring break, the Lady Jay outdoor track squad began their season and picked up where the indoor crew left off thanks to the legs of freshman Lara Shegoski. This past Friday evening, Shegoski was the lone Jay representative at the Raleigh Relays, competing in her first career 10,000-meter race and the team’s first outdoor event of the new year.

Hopkins track and field was well represented this past Saturday at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio as senior Christina Valerio nabbed second place in the 5000-meter breaking both school and Centennial Conference records on the way.

After nearly six months off, the Hopkins men’s tennis team resumed their season this weekend with a rousing 9-0 victory over the Brewers of Vassar College. The Blue Jays had comfortable wins in each of their six singles matches and saw impressive doubles wins by junior-senior tandems of junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe and junior Wareen Elgort and senior Andrew Wang.

Men’s basketball competed in two Centennial Conference affairs this past week, the first of which was Saturday afternoon against the Ursinus Bears, and the second coming Wednesday night at Franklin & Marshall. Both games fell out of favor for the Jays who have struggled mightily this season, their record now falling to 6-18 overall and 4-13 in the conference.

Since the beginning of winter break, the wrestling team has competed in 10 events including the Virginia Duals, Waynesburg Open and Wednesday night’s conference affair with Gettysburg.

The clock struck zero at Homewood Field on Saturday, November 20th, and another Blue Jay football season went into the books. While this season was not the Cinderella sensation of last year, when the Jays marched to the NCAA Elite Eight, 2010 had plenty of excitement, including their dominating finale — a 44-14 win against Lebanon Valley in the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl.

Looking to build off a 6–9 campaign a year ago, the Blue Jay wrestling team began their 2010–2011 season this past weekend with three matches at the University of Maryland. This year began with three tough losses.

A month ago, it would have been tough to imagine Steve Tobochnik running in a meet for Hopkins, let alone leading the Jays to a team award in the biggest race of the season to date. Sidelined with a nagging Achilles tendon injury he suffered during the summer, the men’s cross country captain had not seen a course through the team’s first two meets.

Sean Coleman’s fellow Blue Jays looked on, fingers crossed, struggling to keep the rain out of their eyes to make sure they could see the game’s final play. The rain was thundering down, and players’ jerseys looked as if they were painted onto their bodies as gusts of 30 mph winds flew across the Homewood turf.

After two close games to open the season, the Johns Hopkins football team dominated in its third, crushing the Moravian Greyhounds 41-3 for its second straight Centennial Conference win this past weekend in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Following a solid effort in week one of the Johns Hopkins Women’s Soccer team season in which the Lady Jays defeated both Fredonia State and Salisbury in Salisbury, Maryland, but falling just short of number-one nationally ranked Messiah College 2-1, the girls continued their impressive play this week going 3-0, defeating Wittenberg University, Earlham College, and Stevenson University. They now stand at 5-1 heading into Centennial Conference play.
