This year’s Super Bowl was destined to be a coronation of the old and the new — of well-known faces in the National Football League (NFL) and the faces of the next generation destined to define football for the next decade or more.

I am sure you do not need me to recap the sign-stealing scandal that has been rocking Major League Baseball for the past half year.

There were a few things about my own personal experience watching 1917 — a movie nominated for 10 Academy Awards this year — that were particularly frustrating. The group of 12-year-old boys in the back of the theater talking and laughing at pretty much full volume throughout the movie was one. The fact that my viewing experience was also interrupted midway by an entirely unnecessary and poorly placed intermission was another.

Over Thanksgiving break, I had the privilege of visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Unfortunately, their collection of European painting from the years 1200-1800 are mostly not on display due to ongoing renovations. There was, however, a new and different exhibit I had the opportunity to see, and it was absolutely fascinating.

While there have been many fall sports teams that have had stellar seasons, the Hopkins volleyball team has been the shining star of the Hopkins athletic department this year. The Blue Jays went through a rigorous 27 match regular season and emerged undefeated before continuing their winning streak in the Centennial Conference Tournament and the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

In the promo video for Seth Meyers’ first stand-up special on Netflix (or anywhere, as far as I can tell), he asks a group of children if they’d like to play with a new action figure, “Stand-Up Seth.”

Almost every country in the world has its own soccer league, and in every league there are teams surviving only on the heartfelt support of their local fans. Some teams, however, thrive not only on the fans from the area but fans from across the world.

It’s hard to write a review about a show as well-made and powerful as Unbelievable while simultaneously not recommending it. There is no question that Unbelievable is about as intense and emotionally draining as any show I’ve ever seen. It had me fully hooked every second and fully invested in the outcome of all of the characters involved. It also hurt to watch more than anything I’ve ever experienced before in my life.

The Hopkins football team returned with a vengeance after their disappointing upset to Susquehanna University last week with a massive blowout victory against Moravian College, defeating their fellow Centennial Conference members by a score of 41-0. The Jays held the Greyhounds to only 132 total yards of offense the whole game and dominated from the first touchdown to the fifth.

There is no way to review The Spy, Netflix’s new show about Israeli agent Eli Cohen, without talking extensively about the brilliance of Sacha Baron Cohen. It’s true that the history behind the show is fascinating and that there are some incredible side stories as well. There’s no question that there are distinctive and remarkable artistic decisions taken by the director and cinematographer in almost every episode.

It seems the National Football League (NFL) thought that people were worried after Thursday, Sept. 5’s season opener finished with a final score of 10-3, and it wanted to assure fans that football is still very much alive, at least for the time being. Its seemingly inevitable fall is currently pending with the sharp decline in youth football due to the chronic traumatic encephalopathy epidemic. And so, the NFL graced us with about as exciting of a first Sunday of the season as there can be.
