Staying on campus for fall break? As the weather starts to cool, it’s a great weekend to explore what Baltimore has to offer. Comic-Con takes over the Convention Center, runners fill the streets for the city’s annual marathon and things heat up at Spicy Con in Timonium. You can also spend the afternoon at a lecture on Black fashion history or end the weekend with a night of theater as Art makes its debut at Everyman.

The second weekend of October brings a mix of festivals, art and performance to the city. You can start your Friday with a classic whodunit on stage or seasonal brews at the Zoo, then spend Saturday at Fells Point’s waterfront festival or catch the closing day of The Brave at Galerie Myrtis. On Sunday, Opera Baltimore rounds out the weekend with Puccini’s Tosca, a sweeping production of love and betrayal.

Being a Hopkins student means long hours of studying, endless assignments and plenty of research, but it doesn’t mean fun has to take a back seat. By junior year, I promised myself that I’d prioritize experiences outside of academics. So, after wrangling my friends’ schedules (yes, it took three weeks of notice to get everyone free on the same night), we carved out a Friday evening to hit pause on the grind and see what Baltimore had in store.

The last weekend of September is here, and exams are creeping into everyone’s schedules. While some tests are wrapping up and others are just around the corner, there is still plenty of time to carve out a break. Baltimore is buzzing with options: sip wine among dinosaurs at the Science Center, eat your fill of pasta and cannoli in Aberdeen, sample sweets at Harborplace, cheer on pig races in Pigtown or stroll through the Abell Street Fair to close out the weekend.

On our way to Fells Point, my friend, who would be trying out oysters for the first time soon, was grumbling. “Whenever you ask someone what oysters taste like, they describe it as if they don’t want you to try it,” he said. “It’s really good, but they have the texture of gelatin... almost slimy... and it’s very salty, as if you’re drinking sea water... But it’s so good, you should try it!” he added, imitating those types of people.

During the first week of college, my roommates and I walked to Kung Fu Tea. We had just moved into our dorms and barely knew the city, but boba felt like a safe place to begin. I ordered my usual: brown sugar milk tea with 50% sugar and light ice.

In early March, a quiet conquest of green and pink drinks, assortments of aesthetically pleasing toppings and a well-decorated coffee shop dominated my social media feed. I was thus obliged to visit Equitea, a quaint café nestled among rowhouses on the south side of campus. Inside, I noticed a man — who I later discovered was Quentin Vennie — churning out drinks one by one, handcrafting each beverage to perfection.

Baltimore’s food scene wouldn’t be what it is without the people who built it. Immigrants brought their recipes, adjusted when they had to and held on to what mattered. The result is a city where food carries stories of memory, care and everyday effort.

With low-70-degree weather and sunny skies ahead, it’s the perfect time to take a break and soak up some fresh air. Whether you are cruising through the city or catching a comedy show, these events offer the perfect reset before finals kick in.
