Here I am listening to the achingly beautiful sounds of the second movement of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. As I sit, listening and contemplating the words I am about to type, I cannot help but acknowledge the tears that are falling gently down my cheek as the clarinetist plays what is, by far, one of the most sensuous solos in the repertoire.

Words cannot begin to describe the dining experience at Petit Louis Bistro. Located on the tree-lined vista of Roland Avenue, Petit Louis serves traditional French bistro fare. Though most people consider French food to be pretentious and hard to decipher, bistro fare is very different from classical French cuisine in that it is simple and well-presented.

Ahh. the Hut. Anyone who says the Hutzler Reading Room is a boring spot is so wrong. In fact, I must admit that some of my favorite Hopkins moments involve this all-too-ignored location. While it's true that the temperature in the reading room is usually just off so that it's too hot when warm outside or too cold when it's cold outside, this should not dissuade anyone from finding good times in the Hut. Just follow your mom's advice and dress in layers.

Maryland is not part of "The South." While it's true that Maryland is just south of the Mason-Dixon Line, it is in no way culturally representative of the south in which I grew up. The main difference between Maryland and "The South" is grits.

In a town full of college students, nothing is more appreciated than a coffee shop.

I know a dirty little secret. The Johns Hopkins chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma has an average grade point average of 3.07. Of course, we all know the sorority is mostly comprised of engineers, but that is no excuse for an organization that prides itself on being academic (and having Kate Spade as a member) to have such an unexceptional GPA. Perhaps that's why an advisor from the national office was offering suggestions on how to set up "files" on Wednesday night.

Some schools thrive on tradition. For instance, the University of Virginia has an honor code that dates back to its beginnings and is therefore an integral part of that community. Other schools have time-honored traditions that pass from upperclassmen to freshman. There was a time I can just barely recall when our own dear Johns Hopkins had such a tradition that has come in danger of falling by the wayside. I speak, my friends, of the rubbing of the breasts.

Everywhere, people have been reacting to Tuesday morning's tragedies in various ways. I, myself, felt the horror and gravity of the Sept. 11 events and temporarily found myself shocked and unable to create coherent thoughts. What I realized was that it wasn't just the events of that ill-fated morning that bothered me; it was the interruption of daily life that threw me into a state of confusion.

This summer has been, overall, a disappointment as far as films are concerned. Just about every movie that came out this summer was all hype and no substance. However, there is one movie that came to the rescue and that would be Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

I'm still here. It's been a whole four years and I'm about to embark upon my fifth and final year. Walking around campus, I've been bombarded by the presence of freshman, their new-found friends and concerned parents. This has all taken me back four years to when I was a wide-eyed freshman, eagerly anticipating my parents' departure and my college beginnings.
