High school should be preparing students for the next exciting and challenging phase of their lives, which is attending university. At the very least, students should be taught important information before they are thrust into a new and hectic environment, where they don’t often have time to learn basic life skills other than via trial and error.

Like many Hopkins students, I entered as a pre-med student, with visions of myself as a great and famous doctor captivating my eyes and echoes of accolades ringing in my ears. I thought for sure that medicine was the career path for me and that no obstacle or setback would stop me.

Other than a month in the summer when I worked out at Crunch Fitness with a few of them (spoiler alert: I am horrendously out of shape), I have barely talked with any of my old compatriots since graduation.

President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in an effort to force Ukraine into the Russian sphere of influence on Feb. 24, local time. Since Feb. 24, thousands in Ukraine have been killed and at least 2 million Ukrainians have fled their country.

In an email sent to the Hopkins community on Feb. 25, the University announced the loosening of enhanced COVID-19 safety protocols citing the local and national decrease in cases and hospitalizations as well as high vaccination and booster rates on campus.

A fire was reported on Jan. 28 in The Marylander Apartment Homes a little after 8:00 p.m. The fire triggered two alarms, but no one was injured according to the firefighter ancillary commander on the scene.

In light of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases rise around the country, the University announced on Dec. 22 that most Intersession classes have moved online and the majority of students will not be able to return to on-campus residence halls before Jan. 18. According to the University, in-person research and work will not be impacted by this change.

Earlier this semester, the University announced the official launch of the Behavioral Health Crisis Support Team (BHCST). In an email to the student body on Nov. 9, administration stated that the initiative will begin with a pilot program on Homewood Campus and gradually expand to the entirety of the University.

TEDxJHU hosted its 2021 Fall Salon Event in Shriver Hall on Nov. 18. The Salon also featured the nonprofit organization Teach for America and an a cappella showcase from the Octopodes.

The SLAM Hip Hop Dance Group hosted the 13th Annual SLAM Showcase + Benefit: SLAMMIN’ INTO SPACE on Nov. 13. Ticket proceeds from the event went to the Young Audiences Arts for Learning, an arts education nonprofit. Around 300 people registered to attend the event on CampusGroups.

Last Friday, the student group Refuel Our Future hosted a clothing exchange on the Beach in order to promote support for fossil fuel divestment by the University. Divestment is the practice of reducing or eliminating financial investments in certain sectors or businesses; recently, the movement for fossil fuel divestment has been gaining steam.

In a reversal from previously declared policy, the University announced in an email on August 19 that it will only accept COVID-19 vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which currently includes the Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccines.

In a reversal from previous fall semester masking guidelines, the University announced earlier today that it will reimpose the indoor masking mandate and reinstate social distancing requirements for indoor dining. According to the email, the policies will take effect August 5 for all affiliates, regardless of vaccination status.

Earlier this year, the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) began an investigation into Rasha Anayah, a graduate student and teaching assistant (TA) for Applied Chemical Equilibrium and Reactivity with Lab, after reports surfaced that several of her tweets targeted Zionist and Jewish students.
