With all 30 teams playing fewer than 10 games in the regular season, the playoff picture is already beginning to take shape. But what might be most noticeable to NHL fans is the absence of a certain team from the playoff picture: the Detroit Red Wings. This season brings an end to the Red Wings 25-year playoff streak.

Likewise, the NFL has a franchise tag, unlike the National Basketball Association (NBA), which prevents most talent on the level of LeBron James or Kevin Durant from hitting the open market on a consistent basis. The franchise tag largely prevents the drawn out free agency races that we have seen and grown accustomed to in the NBA.

Two years ago, junior midfielder Joel Tinney electrified Homewood Field with a standout performance in his rookie year as a Blue Jay, tallying 28 goals. At halftime, it looked like the Patriots were going to be outright embarrassed in front of the whole country. After all, no team had overcome a deficit greater than 10 points in the Super Bowl, a feat that the Patriots accomplished against the Seattle Seahawks two years ago to win Super Bowl XLIX.

With Donald J. Trump most likely headed toward defeat in the general election, many political pundits are talking about the impending death of the Republican Party. Nevertheless, these reports are very much premature. Thanks to successes in down ballot elections, the Republicans have a sufficiently deep bench of governors, senators, representatives and state legislators to remain competitive in elections throughout the next four years.

On Jan. 22, 2003, the Red Sox franchise changed forever. It was late in the offseason, and spring training was just weeks away. This past weekend, ninth-ranked Hopkins football improved to 4-0 on the season, with a thrilling 30-24 win against rival #24 Muhlenberg Mules in Allentown, Pa. The Blue Jays and Mules are annually amongst the top teams in the Centennial Conference, with one of them having held a share of the conference title every year since 2001. The game is often among the toughest all season for Hopkins, and this year was no exception. The News-Letter recognizes that there were a number of viable candidates on the team for the Athlete of the Week, such as senior linebacker Garrett Spek, who was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week and senior safety Jack Toner, whose two interceptions late in the game helped seal a victory for the Jays. Offensively, quarterback Jonathan Germano, wide receivers Bradley Munday and Brett Caggiano and running back Ryan Cary helped lead the offense and were worthy of recognition as well.
