You're a little nervous. You spent way too much time picking out what you were going to wear, and even more time checking and rechecking your arsenal of gum and mints just in case the opportunity for a kiss presents itself. You were just about to run to the closest bathroom for a final check when you see, in person, the face you've been envisioning while laying in your bed, daydreaming in class, taking a shower, lathering yourself ... well, you get the picture. The mood is perfect, and all you both can think of is the night of romance ahead.

In a school that rarely sees alumni giving direction towards anything other than the sciences, it is not surprising that acclaimed actor and Hopkins professor John Astin continues to find it difficult to get a theater department started. Before his classes were added to the curriculum, it had been a number of years since any kind of theater courses were offered to regular arts and sciences or engineering students. If a student was interested in acting, directing, or producing, they were forced to develop their own group or join one of the few already in existence. And though this serves to quench the thespian's desire for an artistic medium, there was a clear need for some kind of formal training.

People adjust to the vegetarian diet for many reasons, and perhaps that is why it is always so confusing for some non-vegetarians to understand the drive behind what they find to be ridiculously drastic measures. After all, if you have grown up eating meat products, are reasonably healthy and love nothing more than roast beef, grilled chicken or a plate of veal, then you might not have a clue how someone could deny themselves such a diet staple. But there isn't just one reason, or one belief that a person holds, which drives him or her to swear off animal products. There are a variety of views and tastes involved, which are sometimes influenced by a strong understanding of health or politics.

When my brother comes to visit me at Hopkins, he is amazed. Not at the lacking social life, or the well-kept campus, but rather at how much I rely on AOL Instant Messenger as a crucial part of my social and romantic life. In the four years difference between us, IM has made its imprint on college life, virtually revolutionizing traditional dating. Whereas he used to have to get up enough courage to call that special girl to see what she was up to over the weekend, I can just find out the IM name of the guy I'm interested in and check his away messages to find out where he will be. This brings me to my first point: the beauty of the endless amounts of anonymous stalking that Instant Messenger provides us with.

As college students, we spend an inordinate amount of time procrastinating and avoiding any and all worthwhile activities. Thus, when 2 a.m. rolls around and we have a choice between getting a good night's sleep or staring bleary-eyed at a cheesy reality dating show, we frequently find ourselves slumped over on the couch, clutching the remote andenjoying the latter. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes that these dating shows' portrayal of the dating scene is almost as accurate as a blind sharpshooter.

It's the age-old question, does media imitate life or does life imitate the media? With commercials containing waif-like underwear models and television programs equating thinness with success and happiness, the media's negative emphasis on body image has become almost unavoidable. It's hard to watch, listen to or read any form of commercial media these days without hearing a weight loss advertisement boasting that shedding the pounds will increase relationships and overall quality of life. Instilling the fear of being unloved and unhappy in women nationwide is the clever ploy that helps these companies to sell an unattainable goal.

Remember the good old days of walking three miles in the blistering cold to get just one more lousy Reese's Peanut Butter Cup? The hours spent preparing every aspect of your costume and then the fight that ensued when your mom made you wear your winter coat over it anyhow? How about trying to trick your younger siblings into trading you their Three Musketeers for that crappy marshmallow peanut in the plastic bag? What fond memories those childhood Halloweens brought us. Weeks of planning and preparation followed by days of sugar highs and stomachaches. It just didn't get better than that.

When I turned onFox that fateful night in June, I had no idea that the result of my boredom would turn into an addiction. I wasn't exactly sure at first what I was watching, although I knew it was some sort of reality TV show. Normally, being the critic that I am, I would have turned it off citing the Fox network for more ruthless pleas for viewers. But I just couldn't bring myself to change the channel. The show was called American Idol and even though I was completely repelled by the shows that came before it such as Making the Band and Pop Stars, there was something different about this program. Something distinctive and unique that helped it to become the cult favorite of the summer.

OK, so I'm a big dork. I love going to class, I really love the school aspect of college and I truly enjoy doing my homework. No, I'm not captivated with spending hours poring over words or numbers; I'm a Film and Media Studies major and proud to be one of the happy few. If you are like most other Hopkins students, you are most likely thinking, "We have that major?" And let me be bold and tell you that if you go through four years at this institution without taking a class in the department, you will be making a huge mistake.

In an attempt to slash all of the stereotypes about sororities as they exist on campus, I recently wondered to myself what assumptions incoming freshman may have already made about them. Well, if I was to judge by the oh-so-captivating MTV show, Sorority Life, I would guess they all had fancy houses, party girls, stupid rules and self-righteous members. Let me be the first to tell you, that other than being groups of girls that like to have a good time, the rest of those characteristics couldn't be more incorrect. However, the fancy houses would be nice ...

You've just arrived at Hopkins, spent a whole day unpacking, and are about to venture into the dining hall for the first time. If you are the "typical" college student, you should have no problem loading up on cheeseburgers, tacos, hot dogs and pepperoni pizza at one of your two delectable all-you-can-eat choices. If you happen to be a vegetarian, on the other hand, you may find yourself wandering aimlessly from station to station making a final decision between overcooked carrots soaked in butter or a relatively tasteless salad. Being vegetarian or vegan at JHU is not easy, and if you are used to having healthy filling choices you may find yourself losing the freshman fifteen instead of gaining it. But from many experienced vegetarians who have felt the pain of the dining hall's choices, here are some tips for how to survive, and maybe even enjoy a meal or two now and then!

Cell phones are not going anywhere. It's time to accept it. I'll confess that when they first came out, I regarded anyone that had one with a kind of jealous scorn. But now they are just so practical and inexpensive, that there really is no excuse not to have one. Whether you're a student, a teacher, a doctor, a full-time parent, or a member of the business world, the convenience of being able to talk to whomever, whenever, wherever, has become second nature. Cellular phones have exceeded their primary utility and have now become a main aspect of our social world. They have become fashion statements.

When you think of types of abuse, you probably think of the well-publicized types that we learn about and hope never to encounter as college students: sexual abuse, verbal abuse, alcohol and drug abuse, and even spousal abuse. Yet there is another form of abuse that we each come in contact with every day, but we don't seem to recognize it as such, and consequently we allow it to continue.

If you have ever walked outside, by the corner of North Charles and 33rd Streets, you have probably smelled a very eclectic mix of Asian cuisine wafting out of the open windows of The Silk Road Caf. Located in the Blackstone Apartment building, this small, informal caf feels like a cross between a Chinatown eatery and a dessert caf in Greenwich Village. The casual atmosphere is created by the two quaintly decorated rooms, which are able to seat roughly 35 in wooden booths and at small tables. The walls are adorned with intricate Asian tapestries that add texture to the otherwise basic dcor.

There is one day every year that unites high-school students, college students and parents all over the United States. You'd think it'd be something like Christmas or New years or even Labor Day.
