On Monday night, the visiting Baltimore Orioles dispatched the Boston Red Sox 5-2. The win moved the O’s into sole possession of first place in the American League East at 16-8, which would usually be a cause for celebration. However, the post-game press coverage was dominated by far more insidious incidents that occurred during the game.

The Hopkins men’s baseball team looked to continue their scorching start to the season after a fresh a pair of victories over number one ranked Cortland State and number two ranked Keystone College. The 5-1 Jays entered their matchup against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks with a lot of confidence, but ultimately fell short in a pitcher’s duel at Stromberg Stadium.

This past weekend, the Jays travelled to Chapel Hill to take on the defending NCAA champions, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, in an early season matchup between two top-five teams. The Jays came into the contest fresh off a thrilling overtime victory against their Charles Street rivals, the Loyola Greyhounds, looking to move to 4-0 on the season.

Just look at the Golden State Warriors, who routinely trot out their acclaimed “Lineup of Death” with 6-foot-7-inch power forward, Draymond Green, starting at center. The Houston Rockets have raced out to the third best record in the NBA after moving on from center Dwight Howard in free agency.

Part of this cultural immersion included a live fútbol match. I had never been to a professional soccer game and, luckily for me, Real Madrid happened to be hosting a game the same weekend we were scheduled to visit the city. We excitedly bought tickets and entered the cavernous stadium, ready for a dazzling sports experience.

Over the weekend, the Hopkins men’s basketball team hosted the Ursinus Bears at the 16th Annual Wall-O’Mahony Memorial game. The event is one of the most important of the season for the Jays, as it is honors the memory of Glenn Wall and Matt O’Mahony.

This past weekend, the Hopkins men’s basketball team travelled to Gettysburg, Pa. to take on the Gettysburg College Bullets. The matchup pitted two of the top defensive teams in the Centennial Conference, and the game certainly did not disappoint if you came looking for a defensive slugfest.

It was a record setting day for the Hopkins football team, which has ranked consistently high over the past three seasons. The 42-7 victory over the Ursinus Bears moved the Jays to 8-0 on the season and 7-0 in Centennial Conference play.

Although I can attend games much less frequently now that I am in college, each and every trip to the stadium brings back that same overwhelming feeling of excitement: the shiver that runs down my spine as the players exit the tunnel in a sea of blue and red before kickoff; the giddiness that overcomes me whenever they break a big play on offense or come up with a critical third down sack; that feeling of childlike euphoria that I don’t think I will ever lose.

With the MLB playoffs in full swing, baseball fans across the country are treated to exciting, drama filled affairs on a nightly basis. If you have ever attended a live playoff game, you quickly get a sense that the atmosphere feels different. Each pitch is pivotal, each at bat could decide the outcome of an entire series.

They call me the “Good Luck Charm.” It was a nickname that was not bestowed upon me immediately, of course. When I bundled up in layers and headed with my father to my first Army-Navy game at the age of eight in 2002, the Navy Midshipmen had been defeated by the Army Black Knights the year before. However, Navy would go on to steamroll Army in the game by a score of 58-12.

Heading into week three of the NFL Season, both the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals sat at 1-2 on the year. The NFL always has its surprises, but it was strange to see both participants in last year’s NFC Championship game get off to slow starts.
