After a series of contentious years, many wonder whether the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ new leadership — namely, President Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer — can draw viewers and positive reviews for the upcoming 95th Academy Awards (Oscars). Due to the uncertainty surrounding the value of awards shows, my predictions on who will take home this year’s Oscars will weigh both public opinion and the merit of the nominees themselves.

Picture the AMR II communal kitchen: there’s three-day old leftovers in the fridge (not ours), a dirty pot in the sink (also not ours), freshmen flitting in and out to warm up ramen (couldn’t be us) and, finally, seven girls sitting at the table. We all just wanted to try Shirlene’s pasta.

Is there any movie franchise bigger than the Marvel franchise? After a quick Google search, I received my answer: a resounding no. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has, according to CNBC, grossed over 22 billion dollars at the global box office. For reference, the second-highest-grossing franchise, Star Wars, only grossed 10.2 billion, and it started roughly 30 years before Iron Man was released in 2008.

It’s a quieter week here in the arts world. Big-budget releases and superstar artists have taken the week off — but all the better for it perhaps. It makes for a fantastic chance to dive into the indies, the debut artists and the up-and-comers.

I watch a lot of movies. Most are forgettable, some come back to me from time to time, but a special few stay with me. Last year, of the catastrophically many times I visited the Baltimore theaters, there were some special visits that nestled irrevocably in my memory. I’m not even sure if they are good films — all I know is that I can’t seem to forget them. One such particularly memorable film from last year is South Korean director Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave.

Chances are you’ve been faced with the college question — “Will you or won’t you go to university?” — posed by (hopefully) well-intentioned guardians, mentors or friends. Otherwise, you might be like me, someone from a community where college was never seen as an option, but as an imperative.

The University admitted 278 students to the Class of 2027 through the Early Decision II (ED II) round on Feb. 17. The newly accepted cohort joins the 533 students that were accepted in December through the Early Decision I (ED I) cycle. This is the third year that Hopkins has offered an ED II cycle in addition to ED I and Regular Decision.

As college students, we don’t always think a lot before having sex. We are so excited to explore all the possibilities in life that we forget about the consequences of our actions. We go with the flow and do what feels right.

Valentine’s Day may have come and gone but our love of science is as strong as ever. Some of this week’s greatest discoveries include two unique animals, the power of psychedelics and breakthroughs in the use of acoustic levitation.

What makes a great romantic comedy? Is it option A, the absurdly attractive romantic leads masquerading as average Joes and Janes? Is it option B, the juicy, far-fetched and highly preventable misunderstandings that bring them together? Or maybe it’s option C, the moment when their eyes meet or their shoulders brush and you think, “Yup, they’re endgame.”

During my last week of studying abroad in Seville, Spain, I finally had the opportunity to go rowing in the canals of the Plaza de España, something I had been looking forward to for the entire semester. Even though I lived a five-minute walk away from the Plaza, I somehow hadn’t carved out the time to go rowing until the last possible moment.

After three years of round-the-clock work, the Hopkins Coronavirus Research Center (CRC) announced that it will no longer collect and report data on the COVID-19 pandemic on March 10. This decision comes after consistent declines in state-level pandemic data reporting and the federal government’s increased data capabilities.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union Address, noting that there is a still lot more to do for climate change reform. Looking at this remark as a climate change columnist, I recognize there has been some headway in climate change reform, but it seems that President Biden glossed over properly discussing the issue of climate change. This makes me wonder: Are we doing enough?
