Polo held from sweep of Harvard

By ALANNA OLKEN | October 4, 2012

The Hopkins water polo team took on Toronto and Harvard last weekend at the Bison Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.

The first game of the weekend against Toronto concluded in a 13-6 win for the Blue Jays. Senior Kielan Crow scored four goals throughout the game, while senior Ross Schofield had a hat trick and junior Thomas de Lyon scored a pair. In the net, sophomore goalie Danny Ovelar made five saves in the first two quarters, while freshman Erik Henrikson made three in the remaining two quarters.

The nightcap against Harvard went to the Crimson in an extremely close match, ending 8-9. Earlier this season, in Princton, N.J., Hopkins upset Harvard 8-5. The bid for a season sweep of Harvard was denied. The loss saw Schofield, de Lyon and sophomore Johnny Beal all score twice, while Ovelar made 10 saves.

Meanwhile, Schofield won the prestigious CWPA Player of the week award after his stellar performance at the CWPA Southern Division matches last weekend. He scored a grand total of 19 goals and made seven assists. This was Schofield’s fifth time receiving this award.

“It’s super exciting,” Schofield said. “I have been lucky to have great chemistry with the team this year, which has definitely contributed a lot to my successes so far.”

Next weekend, Hopkins will travel to Claremont, Calif. for the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament to take on Occidental and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, followed by games against Pomona-Pitzer and the University of the Redlands as they enter the home stretch of their schedule.
