F(l)o Show: Tales from the life of a crazed television fangirl

By Florence Lau | September 13, 2012

Many people see September as a month of new starts.

However, I respectfully disagree. I see it as the month my suffering finally ends. This may sounds like a hyperbole, but this is not the case for one simple reason.

That reason?

TV station CEOs and publicists and scriptwriters are sadists. Pure and simple sadists. They sit in their offices and thrive on the pleasure of watching their fans sweat and shed tears over their work. Hell, they probably have an evil laugh they came up with specifically for season finale time. How could they not, when every single one of my shows, from Castle to Grimm, ended with a cliffhanger in May? And this isn’t just prevalent in one genre either!

My statistics professor may disagree (okay, maybe n=4 is a bit too small to generalize to the general population) but this seems like a pretty good sample to me.

So can you really blame me for assuming that all scriptwriters enjoy watching their fans explode of anticipation?

And of course, the publicists. We can’t forget the publicists.

It seems as if the promotional stills and videos that have been released this past month in anticipation of the new seasons openers were designed to squeeze the last few drops of sanity from their viewers and turn us all into incoherent masses begging for something more to sustain us– a spoiler, perhaps, or some more promotional pictures.

The beginning of a TV season is a chance for a fresh start. We all have hopes and fears for the way a show develops, and with the beginning of a new season, we have a chance to see our hopes (or fears) become a reality.

After an especially bad season, a new season is like a breath of fresh air. The show could get better, of course. Or it could get much, much worse, but I prefer not to think about that alternative.

So, looking optimistically forward, here are my hopes, questions, and things I anticipate eagerly a couple of the shows I watch:

How I Met Your Mother: Ted needs to find “the One,” if only so he stops being so obsessive and infuriating all the time. Lily and Marshall need to keep being cute. Barney and Robin need to get back together because we’re all tired of Quinn and we know that Barney and Robin are the endgame anyway.

Once Upon a Time: Emma and her parents are finally going to reunite, so I’m looking forward to all the emotions from that. Also, I can’t wait to see how Emma adapts to the idea of magic and fairytale creatures. Of course, there’s the Belle and Rumplestiltskin storyline. Revengeful Rumplestilstkin and Evil Queen showdown, anyone?

So join me on my adventure through New York City, Storybrooke, and the forests of Portland as I embark on new adventures with my favorite characters this year (and add some new shows to my list).

I’m sure they’ll make me laugh, make me cry, and make my tear my hair in frustration, but as a self-proclaimed crazy fangirl, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
