Hopkins tennis dominates over the weekend

This past weekend, the men’s tennis team lit up the courts on the Homewood campus, easily besting the 40th-ranked N.C. Weslyan Battling Bishops by a 9-1 margin. The other portion of the Jays squad travelled to Allentown, Pa. to take on the Muhlenburg College Mules in a pivotal Centennial Conference bout.

The Jays also emerged victorious from this contest, sweeping all the matches 8-0. With the two victories, the 28th-ranked Jays moved to 12-5 on the season with a mark of 6-1 in the Centennial.

In the home portion of their weekend split-squad doubleheader, the Jays jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in what was a clean sweep at doubles. Senior Nicholas Garcia and junior Emerson Walsh opened the contest at second with a dominant 8-1 victory. The doubles pairings of junior Jeremy Dubin with sophomore Justin Kang and sophomore David Perez with freshman Scott Thygesen also picked up wins at third and first, respectively.

Moving to singles play, the match was decided when Kang vanquished Bishops’ sophomore Mikhail Konnov at fifth. Garcia picked up a victory in singles play, defeating 28th-ranked sophomore Sebastian Sikh 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (3).

In Allentown, the Jays were equally as dominant against the host Mules. Hopkins only lost a total of six games en route to the dominant victory,

The Jays also had an impressive weekend on the courts, topping Muhlenburg by an 8-1 margin on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the 11th-ranked Jays now sit at 13-4 on the campaign, a mark which includes a perfect 8-0 record in Centennial competition.

The women opened the match by sweeping doubles competition resolutely, only dropping a total of four games in the process. At first, the dynamic doubles pairing of sophomores Megumi Chen and Caroline Greydak was victorious in straight sets, blanking their challenges by an 8-0 margin.

Junior Anna Kankanala and senior Olivia Kasten followed that result with an impressive 8-3 victory of their own. A win by freshman Mika Inadomi and senior Andrea Joseph pushed the Lady Jays out to a commanding 3-0 as the teams entered singles play.

Kasten went on to clinch the victory for Hopkins, winning her singles match by a score of 6-0, 6-1.

You can catch the men’s and women’s teams in action this Saturday April 30, when they host Washington College and Swarthmore College, respectively.
