President Brandon Scott of the Baltimore City Council won the Democratic primary for Baltimore Mayor with 29.46 percent of the vote on June 9. The official race call comes a week after the Maryland primary elections.

More than 600 faculty members signed a petition delivered to University President Ronald J. Daniels on June 5 calling for greater representation in University decision-making. The petition also demanded more financial transparency and the reversal of various austerity measures taken by the University, including hiring freezes and suspension of retirement plan contributions.

Former Maryland Senator and Professor of Public Policy Barbara Mikulski delivered a keynote address on the 2020 U.S. Census in Levering Hall’s Glass Pavilion on Monday. She was joined by panelists Mary Elizabeth Hughes, associate scientist at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Austin Davis, 2020 Census manager for Baltimore City’s Department of Planning.

The Inter-Asian Council and Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority Inc. hosted an event between the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) and Latinx communities on Tuesday. These groups convened to facilitate a conversation led by group speakers about the overlap and interaction between APIDA and Latinx identities.

The Hopkins College Democrats and Support Her Election (SHE), a Maryland grassroots organization that supports progressive female political candidates, co-hosted the inaugural SHE Policy Symposium on Saturday in Shaffer Hall. Three different panels convened to discuss climate change, immigration and women in politics.

The Hopkins chapter of the Alexander Hamilton Society (AHS) hosted its first event of the year, a discussion on bioterrorism, titled “Bioterrorism and U.S. Security” last Thursday, Oct. 10. The discussion brought former U.S. Sen. Jim Talent of Missouri and Bloomberg School of Public Health Associate Professor Gigi Gronvall to Gilman Hall. AHS is a national organization that is dedicated to educating students on issues of foreign policy and geopolitics.

The Pride Center of Maryland held a discussion with Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Harrison told attendees that one of his top priorities is bringing the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) in line with what city residents need from their police department.

The Center for Social Concern (CSC) organized the 11th annual President’s Day of Service (PDOS) last Saturday. The CSC serves as the University’s hub of civic engagement and service for all Hopkins students, housing over 50 student organizations that offer a wide variety of opportunities, ranging from tutoring children to volunteering with local nonprofits.

Climate change is real. There is an objective, sweeping consensus throughout the scientific community that human activity is substantially responsible for the gradual warming of planet Earth. No longer do we have time to dispute the validity of this claim; this has no business being the argument that drives the climate change discussion anymore. The question of “if” this problem exists has migrated to the question of “how” we are going to assuage it. This conflict, unfortunately, is becoming destructive in its asininity that is perpetuated by members who still exist in the “climate change isn’t real” camp.
