The 2003-04 school year marked a tumultuous time for Hopkins Student Council (StuCo) election process. The year began with a promising start when freshman elections experienced a marked jump in turnout from years past, due to an online system of voting and better promotion. However, after its early successes, the electoral process and the Board of Elections (BoE) ran afoul. On Nov. 17 freshman Jered Ede submitted a referendum to alter the StuCo constitution. An urgent election was held and the referendum passed by a vote of 389-322.

The Student Activities Commission (SAC) Executive Board met this weekend in an annual budgeting deliberation to determine funding appropriations for student groups during the 2004-05 school year. In an effort to avoid running into a financial crunch, similar to this year's "red zone," the SAC made more conservative funding decisions for next year.

Roughly 4,000 pink and blue flags criss-crossed the upper quad Tuesday as part of a demonstration by Voice for Life, a campus pro-life organization. The scattering of nylon flags represented the number of abortions performed daily in the United States.

A record number of Hopkins women began the annual sorority rush last week, which will end this Thursday with a new Panhellenic introduction to Greek life. Although the procedures for this year's rush were essentially the same as last year's, the Panhellenic Council decided to add a closing ceremony.

Actor and comedian Bill Cosby will address graduating students as the keynote speaker at the Johns Hopkins undergraduate commencement on May 20, 2004. Cosby will also become one of the few entertainers in Johns Hopkins history to be awarded a Degree of Humane Letters.

The recent undergraduate-approved Student Council (StuCo) constitution has left StuCo with no bylaws and no class representatives. Until new Senators are elected and new bylaws are passed, "Student Council is dead in water," according to Director of Student Involvement Jeff Groden-Thomas.

Sodexho Dining Services premiered a kiosk based on their newest brand, Jazzman's Caf, in Gilman Hall last Monday. The kiosk is a temporary venue while the larger, more extensive Jazzman's Caf begins construction in the entrance to Levering Hall.

At one point in our college careers we were all freshmen. We didn't know anyone, so we clung to the people nearest to us: our dorm mates. As time passed on, we came to the realization that a basis for a friendship should be more than just convenient geography.

It has been 16 years and running since Hopkins last won anational championship. As a member of that 1987 Championship team, headcoach Dave Pietramala knows what it takes to win. Over the past threeseasons Pietramala has helped maintain the excellence expected from aJohns Hopkins Lacrosse team. We have had some strong teams sincePietramala took over, but this year's team is really something special.

Both the Men's and Women's Fencing teams got their seasons underway last week by competing in separate events. It has been a successful start to the season for the Blue Jays Men's Fencing team, as they have notched wins in all but one of their matches so far.
