When looking to elect a leader, or more specifically, president of the United States, empathy is one of the most important traits a candidate should possess. The role of the president is to govern and lead a diverse group of individuals, each with their own unique backgrounds and to put forth and implement policies that will benefit the common good. I believe empathy is necessary for this job, because without it, we risk appointing an indifferent or even cruel individual to make decisions that will have tremendous effects on us all.

The Hopkins chapter of the Alexander Hamilton Society hosted a debate on Russian influence and foreign policy in the Middle East on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Charles Commons. The debate featured Robert Freedman, a political science professor and Michael Singh, a national security expert from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Steven David, a professor of political science, moderated the discussion.

Joy Gaslevic became assistant vice provost and Title IX coordinator within the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) effective June 1. As Title IX coordinator, she organizes University efforts to prevent and address sex discrimination across all of Hopkins’ domestic and overseas campuses.

Students activated a fire sprinkler in their dorm room on the 12th floor of the Charles St. Building of Charles Commons, which led to flooding and an evacuation on Sunday, Sept. 4. The Housing Office has not clarified the cause of the incident.

The University has announced that the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) and the Carey Business School will offer a new joint-degree program for undergraduate students starting next fall. The five year program will allow students to receive a Bachelor’s of Science degree (BS) from WSE and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Carey School.

The Public Health Student Forum hosted their 7th annual Public Health Conference entitled More Life for More Lives on Tuesday in Shriver Hall. Several undergraduates presented their research on topics ranging from race and mental health to prenatal health for pregnant women in Tanzania. Student health organizations were also highlighted at the conference.

Multiple terrorist attacks have struck Turkey this month. The most recent bombing on March 19 was the fourth major terrorist attack of the year. At least 42 people have been killed and 163 injured throughout the month in the attacks on Ankara, Turkey’s capital, and Istanbul, its largest city.

The Department of Political Science and the Center for Africana Studies hosted a debate entitled From Protest to Politics? #BLM and the Future of Black America this past Wednesday in Levering’s Great Hall. The debate featured JHU’s Associate Professor of Political Science Lester Spence and Brown University’s Merton P. Stoltz Professor of the Social Sciences and Professor of Economics Glenn C. Loury. The two professors discussed the Black Lives Matter movement and the state of social and racial justice in America.

Students from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions attended the Real Food Baltimore Regional Action Training and Strategy Retreat, hosted by Real Food Hopkins, at Charles Commons from Feb. 11-14. The weekend’s events centered around protesting the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement, as well as planning new initiatives and strategies to promote “real” food on college campuses.
