Since 1880, the University has awarded 470 Honorary Degrees to accomplished leaders from a variety of fields. This year seven of such leaders will receive an honorary degree and join the likes of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bill Cosby. The 2014 recipients include Susan Wojcicki, Norman Augustine, Taylor Branch, Fred Lazarus, Edith Windsor, Pamela Flaherty and Roberta Kaplan.

Students interested in tropical biology and evolution traveled to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands this past Intersession. The class of 22 students, which was open to all majors, took place on campus from Jan. 4-5 and in Ecuador from the 6th to the 17th. The class was led by instructors Dr. Greg Ball, Dr. Richard Shingles and Professor Farrah Madison.

On March 21, a group of six Hopkins students finished in first place in the Strategic Allocation of Business Resources Competition (SABRE) competition at the American Marketing Association’s 35th Annual International Collegiate Conference.

Sophomore and French native Violette Perrotte has been selected to represent France at the weeklong Girls 20 Summit in Moscow, Russia from June 14 to June 21. She will partake in panel discussions, attend workshops and caucuses and promote tangible solutions for the economic and political well being of women. The summit will culminate in a press conference that provides an outline on how the G20 can implement these solutions.

Fraternity recruitment for undergraduate males at Hopkins began Feb. 5 with an information session and continued through Friday, Feb. 15, with each fraternity hosting events for new members. A total of approximately 230 students participated in formal recruitment for Hopkins’s 11 fraternities, hoping to receive invitations to join one.

Though in the past, the Hopkins Greek community has hosted a three-day long Greek Weekend, this year, seven days of events raised money for a variety of charities. Hopkins’ Greek Week began on Oct. 20 and will officially end with the Powderpuff game on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Jon Walter, Hopkins’s newest Student/Community Liaison, began his training this past weekend under the supervision of the beloved, outgoing liaison, Carrie Bennett. Walter patrolled campus both Thursday and Saturday nights.

Musician, producer and recent author Wyclef Jean visited Barnes & Noble Johns Hopkins yesterday to promote his new book, Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story. During the event, Jean discussed his book, answered questions and performed for his audience.
