Following the lack of success of the Aramark worker rally on April 22, Robert Day, an English doctoral candidate and the organizer of the rally, and representatives from several student organizations arranged a meeting with David Furhman, director of Dining Programs, and Sarah Steinberg, interim vice provost for Student Affairs, last Monday, May 2. This was another attempt to persuade the University to issue a public statement to pressure Aramark to settle a fair contract with its workers at Hopkins.

Hopkins hosted its annual Relay for Life cancer fundraiser on Keyser Quad last Friday. Part of the American Cancer Society, the event lasted 12 hours, running from 7 p.m. on Friday night until 7 a.m. the next morning. It featured a wide variety of entertainment and a number of different ceremonies and presentations that emphasized the dangers of cancer.

Student exit interviews are currently being scheduled and conducted by the Office of Enrollment and Academic Services. The 30-minute interviews are conducted by staff from several different administrative departments within Hopkins including Student Life and the Academic Dean’s Offices. The interviews are conducted as informal conversations in which faculty members may gain qualitative insight into the student experience at Hopkins.

A crowd of 50 Hopkins undergraduates, graduates and Aramark employees gathered outside the President’s office in Garland Hall last Friday to petition the Hopkins administration and to publicly pressure Aramark Catering to quickly negotiate a fair contract with its employees.

Three Hopkins students were awarded for their achievement in the arts on April 8. Senior Philip Wolf was awarded the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts and seniors Clare Grechis and Andrew Lelin were awarded the President’s Commendation for Achievement in the Arts.

Tariq Ramadan, author and professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University, spoke at the Hopkins Muslim Association’s (MA) annual Spring Banquet last Friday. Ramadan spoke about the issues of contemporary Islam and ways Muslims may reconcile and reform their religion to better interact with the modern world.

At Tuesday’s Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, a bill was discussed that would announce SGA support of the Aramark workers in their contract negotiations with Aramark. The bill called for a fair and responsible contract to be negotiated between Aramark and its workers. The bill was met with significant opposition by SGA members who felt that either the SGA should remain neutral or that the SGA had insufficient information on the situation to form a conclusion.

Last Monday, the results of the Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Elections were announced. Current junior class president Ardi Mendoza was elected executive president; current sophomore executive treasurer Wyatt Larkin was elected vice president; current sophomore class senator Joanna Gawlik was elected treasurer; and freshman Annie Scavelli was elected secretary. Voter turnout reached an all-time high of 1663 voters, or 35 percent of the student body, a 5 percent increase from the previous year’s turnout.

Like any Hopkins student, Dylan Goldberg worries about the next assignment he has due and the next test coming up. He worries about taking the MCAT and the work he’ll have when he’s studying at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. But Goldberg worries about something else that most Hopkins students do not: paying for repairs on his prosthetic leg.

Last Friday, the Hopkins Red Cross Chapter held its Medicine Through Music Benefit Concert to promote and fundraise for the Disaster Action Team (DAT) of the American Red Cross. The event featured performances from several campus a capella and dance groups as well as a presentation on the DAT by a senior member of the Baltimore DAT.

Last week, Hopkins purchased a University-wide site license for Likewise Enterprise for the purpose of integrating Mac, Linux, and Unix machines with the Johns Hopkins Enterprise Active Directory (JHED). Departments that choose to utilize the software will be able to apply group policies and have single sign-on (using their JHED), to their Mac, Linux, and Unix machines.

The Student Health and Wellness Center will have a Registered Nurse on hand October 19, 20, and 21 to exclusively administer flu vaccine to students, either by appointment or by walk-in, said Dr. Alain Joffe, Director of the Student Health and Wellness Center.

For the ninth anniversary of September 11th, the American Red Cross Johns Hopkins University chapter hosted a Day of Service and Remembrance to honor the lives lost in the tragedy and those that continue to give their lives overseas.
