This week, University President Ronald J. Daniels and Provost Robert C. Lieberman announced a University-wide Task Force on Mental Health and Wellbeing, the culmination of many months of work by the administration and SGA. I am, quite frankly, thrilled by the University’s commitment to ameliorating the issue of mental health here on campus and eagerly look forward to working with them on this important task.

Those who know me best know that I have a profound respect for the late Chief Justice Earl Warren. His world-changing statement, “We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of “‘separate but equal’ has no place” still sends tingles up my spine, and a powerful dissent in which he wrote, “The censor’s sword pierces deeply into the heart of free expression,” absolutely fires me up. But there is one Warren quote — about newspapers, no less — that took me a while to warm up to: “I always turn to the sports pages first, which record people’s accomplishments. The front page has nothing but man’s failures.”

The first time I was really faced with the realization of the importance of my contributions to The News-Letter was probably in a lecture hall on Oct. 11, 2012, early in the fall of my freshman year. I still remember so vividly sitting in “The Constitution and the Criminal Justice System” and witnessing firsthand the effects of my work on the paper.

As Hopkins students, we often find ourselves just trying to stay afloat academically. Heads down, unresponsive to our surroundings, we purposefully walk about campus from one study spot to another. When we finally are able to escape the confines of the bleakness that is academia, whether due to comfort or due to ease, we often limit ourselves to Charm City. I certainly am guilty of this practice. And yet there is so much more out there.

On Dec. 9, the Iota Tau chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) at Hopkins notified the University of its decision to forfeit its charter. The chapter, which has retained a charter for 22 years, informed its international fraternity of this decision on Jan. 26.

On Monday, Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels announced the appointment of T.E. (Ed) Schlesinger as the next Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering. Schlesinger was approved by the Board of Trustees and will assume leadership of the Whiting School on Jan. 1.

Last Thursday, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley appointed Hopkins alumni and adjunct professor Brian Feldman to the state Senate. The appointment filled the vacancy created by the resignation of Sen. Rob Garagiola, who represented Montgomery County in District 15.

With the bustling storefronts, racing cars and hoards of pedestrians surrounding it, the empty lot on St. Paul Street — formerly known as the “Olmstead Lot” — stands alone. Last fall, Hopkins detailed plans to develop the lot after years of idleness due to financial concerns. Now, more information on the project is trickling out.

At 5:26 p.m. today, the Johns Hopkins Emergency Alert Text Message System sent a campus-wide message informing students of a bomb threat at Subway. The message read, “Bomb threat at Subway Restaurant located at 33rd & St Paul, Charles Village. Avoid the Location.”

On Wednesday, the development team responsible for the Olmsted Lot construction announced that it will not pursue plans to include a grocery market on the empty lot. Armada Hoffler, the development firm, released a statement explaining that it will not include a grocery store as a result of community pressures urging the firm and University to instead pursue other options.
