Following a two-game losing streak that saw the Lady Jays drop from their 5th ranking in Division III, the women’s soccer team has turned things around in a big way. After cruising past Roanoke a week and a half ago, the Lady Jays took the field against Stevenson on Wednesday of last week. The offense came out firing on all cylinders, scoring early and often as they eased their way to a 5-0 shutout victory.

Coming off their second straight National Championship, the Hopkins Lady Jays entered the season as the top ranked Division III team in the nation, and expectations are high for another successful season on Homewood Campus. Hopkins did not disappoint in its first two meets of the season at the Baltimore Metro Invitational and the Salisbury Fall Classic, easily cruising to victories in both of this past weekend’s races.

The Hopkins women’s tennis team capped off an undefeated season in the Centennial Conference (CC) on Saturday, April 26. This is the eighth straight season this has occurred, and the team has won 80 straight conference matchups.

Sophomore third baseman Raul Shah had quite the weekend at the plate, especially in the doubleheader against Swarthmore. Shah was 5-6 at the plate with two homers, leading Hopkins to wins in both games. On the week, Shah hit .611 at the plate with a 1.056 slugging percentage, and was named in D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week. After spending last season as a seldom-used backup, Shah has emerged as one of the key contributors on the team this year. He was kind enough to answer a few questions about his season, his offseason training and the team’s performance thus far.

Last week, the Hopkins men’s tennis team won three matches against Bates, Carnegie Mellon and Dickinson. The wins put the Jays at 6-2 to start the season, which has led them to be ranked fifth in the NCAA. The Blue Jays also picked up their first win in the Centennial Conference with the victory over the Red Devils.

Over the past week, the Hopkins Lady Jays picked up two impressive wins against the number five Loyola Greyhounds and the American Eagles. The wins put Hopkins at 5-0 to start the season, as the team is now ranked #14 in the nation. Against Loyola, the Lady Jays held the Greyhounds to their lowest score under Coach Jen Adams, who has headed the Loyola program for six years. The win was also Hopkins’ first against a top-five team since toppling number two Northwestern in 2011.

On Feb. 22, the Hopkins Lady Jays travelled to Chestertown, Md. for their regular season finale against the Washington College Shorewomen. The first half of the basketball game did not go as planned for Hopkins, as the team was behind 27-25 at the half, never once holding the lead. Still, Hopkins fought back in the second half, quickly taking the lead on back-to-back shots by sophomore guards Katie Clark and Liz Tommasi, putting Hopkins up 30-27 with 18:39 left in the game. The lead, however, was short lived as the Shorewomen quickly regained the lead 31-30.

On Feb. 15, the Hopkins Lady Jays cruised to a blowout 16-2 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles in the season opener on a cold and snowy morning at Homewood Field. Despite the large margin of victory, it was Marquette that jumped to an early 1-0 lead, after capitalizing on failed clear. The Lady Jays did not let this discourage them, quickly answering with four unanswered goals with the first being a free position strike from Sophomore Jenna Reifler, who just 50 seconds later, assisted on a tough-angle goal by Senior Taylor D’Amore from the left goal line. Sophomore Dene DiMartino then scored Hopkins’ third goal in 2:26, and D’Amore later assisted Junior Jen Cook to put the Lady Jays up 4-1.

On Feb. 7, the Hopkins men and women’s track teams travelled up north to Boston to compete in the Boston University Valentine Invitational. It was a record setting day for both squads, as both teams set numerous season, personal and school records. For the men, sophomore Trevor Holmgren set the school record in the 800 meter with a time of 1:53.04, breaking the record set by teammate senior Andrew Carey in the Bison Open at Bucknell just over a week before. The two runners now rank in the top five nationally in the event, and the top two in school history.

On Jan. 31, the fourth-ranked Hopkins women’s swimming traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. for a dual meet with Mary Washington. It was the team’s final dual meet, finishing at 6-2 on the season.

This past Saturday, the Hopkins Lady Jays participated in the Philadelphia Invitational Fencing Tournament, emerging with a 3-2 record. The team defeated Drew, Haverford, and Lafayette, but fell to tough defeats against #7 Northwestern and #9 Temple.

Last week, the sixth ranked Hopkins Blue Jays faced off against the Williams Ephs and the Middlebury Panthers in NCAA tournament action. The Lady Jays triumphed 2-1 in a double overtime clash against #7 Williams in the Sweet Sixteen, but fell to #13 Middlebury in heartbreaking fashion, with the Panthers knocking Hopkins out of tournament play with a last minute goal to win 1-0.

This past weekend, the Hopkins volleyball team emerged triumphant from the Centennial Conference tournament, upsetting top seeded Franklin and Marshall (F&M) and defeating number three seed Muhlenberg en route to a berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Lady Jays became the first team in history to win the Centennial Conference Tournament as a number four seed, and have now won the tournament for three straight years.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Hopkins men’s soccer team suffered a tough loss away against the Washington College (WC) Shoremen. The game was WC’s first home win over the Jays since 1981 and dropped Hopkins to 7-7-2 on the season with a Centennial Conference record of 4-3-1. It also snapped Hopkins’ six game unbeaten streak and essentially made the season finale against the Haverford Fords a must win to secure a playoff berth.
