The University updated the Hopkins community on the progress of the Charles Street reconstruction project this past Friday via email. The developments include the removal of several large blockades that will allow for easier pedestrian access to the Homewood campus, the continuation of roadwork and detours that will affect those living in Charles Village.

On April 3, the Oversight Action and Awareness Committee (OAAC) launched a public Facebook page to further its mission of increasing transparency and accountability among student-run organizations on campus. The group is categorized as a community organization, though it is not an official campus group because its application to the Student Government Association (SGA) was not submitted until a day after deadline. Director of Student Activities Robert Turning confirmed that the application was received on March 2 at 3:49 p.m.

Vice Provost for Student Affairs Kevin Shollenberger emailed the University community on March 27 to announce that Susan Boswell, dean of student life, will be stepping down to take on a new role as his special advisor on July 1. Terry Martinez, the interim dean of students at Columbia University, will take over as the new dean of student life.

This past week marked Baltimore’s sixth annual Winter Restaurant Week, beginning on Feb. 16 and running through Feb. 23. Though the city also hosts this event in the summer, its winter iteration tends to be more highly publicized and celebrated with more gusto.

Next Monday, Feb. 24, the University will hold a Commemoration Ball in honor of the school’s founding. The official anniversary of the school’s founding falls on Feb. 22 each year — the date that the University’s first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, was sworn in.

On Feb. 8, the brothers of the Hopkins chapter of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity posted a parody of The Wolf of Wall Street trailer on Vimeo.com, a video sharing website. Within hours, it had been picked up by other sites, such as TotalFratMove.com, where it was proclaimed to be “so damn good” and given “two thumbs way up.”

Founded this April as a provisional group, the Students for Justice in Palestine club seeks to provide Hopkins with another point of view regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Freshman Maysa Elsheikh, co-founder of the new group along with junior Basmah Nada, explained that she and a few friends sensed a one-sidedness to the attention given to the conflict.

This month, Hopkins will be observing STI Awareness Month by providing students with a method of free testing for sexually transmitted diseases next Wed., April 24. Prompted by a need for less expensive tests, as well as greater convenience when obtaining these tests, the initiative will take place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Mattin Center courtyard.

Anne Smedinghoff, a 2009 graduate of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Hopkins and a U.S. Diplomat in the public affairs division of the State Department, was killed in a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan on Saturday.

President Ron Daniels sent a school-wide email on Tuesday announcing the possibility of the Men’s Lacrosse Team joining a formal league after its 130-year history playing as an independent team. The University has decided to form a committee, made up of alumni and school officials, to evaluate Hopkins’s affiliates opinions on the prospect; they have until May 15.

The Marshal L. Salant Student Investment team is a group of 14 students that manages a portfolio totaling over $200,000, from which a percentage of profits are used for need-based scholarships given to students at the Whiting School of Engineering and the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
