As we scroll through TikTok, our screen is littered with the words “mob wife,” “coquette,” “office siren,” “clean girl,” “quiet luxury,” “rockstar girlfriend” — just to name a few. I think I can ask the question that we are all wondering: What do any of these words even mean? What do they look like? Why can I not escape them?

News has evolved into increasingly shorter formats, shrinking from newspapers to newsletters, and, now, you can pretty much stay updated with just a few quick scrolls through your social media feeds. From the latest OpenAI breakthroughs to the chaos of recent elections, it’s all there. Social media has made it ridiculously easy. I mean, I can zip through about 10 posts on Instagram and X in just 15 minutes before dashing off to class rather than slogging through a single article. The speed and convenience are unbeatable compared to the old-school news cycle.

The Barbie movie was one of the biggest Hollywood successes of 2023, grossing over $1 billion worldwide, receiving nominations for eight Oscars and winning 167 awards.

Following the Queen’s passing in Sept. 2022, the official announcement on the royal family’s Twitter account became the most popular tweet of the week, receiving millions of likes. With over thirteen million Instagram followers, the Royal Family has accumulated a serious social media following. Multitudes of movies and television shows scramble to mimic life under the crown for the public’s eyes, with Bridgerton receiving over six hundred million viewing hours in the first few weeks of the second season’s release. Time and time again, the public’s fascination with the British monarchy has proven to be a force to be reckoned with.

The "alt-right" or "alternative right" encompasses a collection of far-right ideologies with strong associations to nativism and populism. The leader of the white supremacist National Policy Institute describes the alt-right movement as one that rejects egalitarianism and advocates for the preservation of traditional Western civilization along with a return to libertarian-style governance. While its origins in the U.S. can be traced back to the 1964 presidential nomination of Barry Goldwater, this distinct strain of conservative thought has deeper historical roots within smaller fringe groups.

Between coursework and extracurriculars, it can be difficult to keep up with the dizzying pace of the news cycle as a college student. Despite the way current events can feel overwhelming, being an informed citizen is a crucial individual responsibility and essential to being an active member of a democratic society.

While the air cools down, an undeniable warmth seeps into the heart of Baltimore. Sunlight filters through the soft canopy of park pathways, gilding the gold and amber leaves with shimmer. At farmers markets, patrons are greeted by the comforting scent of coffee and the vividness of ripe fall fruits. The city hums with fresh produce, seafood and craft wines.

As the leaves change color and the air turns cold and crisp, it's time to whip out the pumpkin spice lattes and embrace the flavors of fall. From seasonal vegetables, like pumpkins and squashes, to the dishes that make you want to curl up by a fire, fall is a time for cozy nights and the smell of cinnamon.

Heat, thunderstorms and sudden rises and drops in temperature were what September brought to Maryland. I had never appreciated Baltimore’s weather as a Maryland native, but the transition from summer to fall seemed particularly bad this year. In a few weeks, I ran out of patience trying to find the right transitional outfits and relied on a pullover sweater to keep myself warm on those chilly days.

When I think of Taylor Swift’s album Red, a few things come to mind. Structurally, I think of how the album demonstrated Swift’s potential to segue from country to pop, offering hits like “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Beyond this, though, I think of the personal memories I have associated with Red: a November run on Cape Cod with leaves crunching under my feet and “Starlight” blasting from my headphones, listening to “Holy Ground” with the distance to finally look back fondly on a relationship, playing “Begin Again” after a promising Wednesday morning coffee date.

Before the season of nostalgic Christmas movies and cheesy Hallmark Channel love stories comes television with its own unique aesthetic — movies and TV show episodes that simply match September-November energy. The fall season has lots of nostalgic, light-hearted choices to pick from, so here is a list of my top movies and TV shows to watch as the weather starts to cool down. This list purposely excludes horror movies, as they are a category of their own.

To celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, and to do a bit of research for this magazine article, I watched every single Thanksgiving-themed Friends episode — one episode a day — over dinner with my girlfriend, Stella. What makes this ranking different from the millions of rankings out there is that I am a huge fan of Friends, while Stella hasn’t seen a single episode. So the average of our scores will hopefully provide a fresh perspective. Just a warning, Stella’s intolerance for laugh tracks will be a consistent theme here; she’s more of a Brooklyn Nine-Nine fan.

Fall is marked by the most specific and iconic symbols of any season: pumpkins and pumpkin-inspired foods, changing leaves, Halloween costumes, turkey legs and, of course, horror movies.

Every season has its associated food, clothes and activities. Pumpkin spice lattes, flannels and apple picking all bring fall to mind. Yet, my most fall-esque associations will always be Bon Iver, Noah Kahan’s Stick Season and Taylor Swift’s Evermore. Hopefully, this music will bring you the same autumnal joy it brings me.

Autumn is the season of in-betweens.

Why is it that we associate the season of fall with endings?

Gilmore Girls was never a hit during its original run. It didn’t win awards or gain a large following, but the show’s Netflix-sponsored revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and the wave of millennial nostalgia in the past two decades sparked the show’s current fame. Its enduring cultural impact is a hallmark of Gilmore Girls itself; there’s a hard-to-place something about the show that makes it appeal to its large fanbase today.

And so, fall begins. The scorching summer temperatures have subsided, jeans and sweatshirts have become the daily fashion and Nolan’s is serving pumpkin spice coffee — it’s no Starbucks, but still.

Since Peter Dukes, Starbucks’ director of espresso, and his team developed the infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) in the Liquid Lab just short of 20 years ago, the PSL has become not only Starbucks’ most popular seasonal product since its launch but has become a way of life for some and a cultural phenomenon for even more. For all, though, the annual re-up of the pumpkin drink is a signal of the oncoming fall season.

I first heard of the idea of romance in platonic relationships at a Barbie movie after-party. We were playing some game — the name of which I can’t remember — that asked questions to help everyone at the party get to know one another better. The game was going well, funny stories and embarrassing moments were being shared when suddenly a question stunned the group.
