The Hopkins men’s and women’s fencing teams traveled to the “City of Brotherly Love” to compete in the Philadelphia Invite. The event featured some of the top competitors across the country.
As the season presses on, the women’s tennis team has continued to improve from week to week. On Saturday, the Lady Jays topped Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg as well as 21st ranked Mary Washington. The two wins extended the team’s win streak to six consecutive games.
Last weekend, the Lady Jays took off to Greencastle, In to take part in the 2014 ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The event spanned three days and consisted of matches against UC Santa Cruz, Pomona-Pitzer and Carnegie Mellon.
The end of the regular season proved to be a strong one for the Hopkins women’s track and field team. Coming off of a very strong performance at the United States Naval Academy last weekend, the Lady Jays found themselves in Haverford, Pa. to conclude their indoor regular season at the Keogh Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
After a week of hard work and preparation, the Hopkins men’s track team hiked to Bucknell University to take part in the 16th Annual Bison Open. This was a two-day event that closed out January and kicked off February for the Blue Jays.
Last weekend, the men’s track team set out to Haverford, Pa. to take part in the Haverford Invitational. The team had high hopes going into their final competition before the start of the second semester. The day surely lived up to their expectations.
Junior Jimmy Hammer, the basketball team’s talented guard has been selected as The News-Letter’s Athlete of the Week for his tremendous play through the beginning portion of the season. Hammer has played a major role in leading Hopkins to a 4-3 overall start against a very tough schedule thus far. He opened the season with one of the best games in the program’s history when he put up an astounding 38 points. The News-Letter caught up with Jimmy to ask him a few questions about how the team plans to stay on track as conference play continues.
As Saturday, November 15 rolled around the corner, the Hopkins volleyball team found themselves in Huntingdon, Pa to face Eastern University in their third straight NCAA appearance. The team knew they had a tough task ahead of them, but because of their ability to overcome all obstacles coupled with an impressive set of performances in the Centennial Conference playoffs, the Lady Jays felt confident.
As the season’s end loomed in the near horizon, the Hopkins field hockey team took to the field against the Gettysburg Bullets this past weekend. On Senior Day at Homewood field, the team looked for an important win to land them a spot in the Centennial Conference Playoffs. Unfortunately, they could not accomplish their goal. With that said, a lack of effort was not the reason.
Sophomore Caitlin Callihan set the pace for Hopkins athletics this week. The Texas native is a starting outside hitter for the women’s volleyball team. She was recently named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week for her astounding 53 kills in a three game span against opponents Stevenson, Gallaudet and Swarthmore. By the end of her torrid week, in which she recorded more than 20 kills in a match twice, the team had a 3-0 record in the conference.
Last Friday, Sept. 13, the men’s and women’s cross country teams laced up in State College, Pa for the Spiked Shoe Invitational. It was a very successful day for Hopkins as the women stormed their way to a second place finish while the men powered all the way up to a fourth place finish.
The Hopkins men’s soccer team dropped their first match against a Centennial Conference foe last weekend. The 19th ranked Swarthmore Garnet maintained their undefeated record, as they slid past Hopkins with a 1-0 victory at home.
The men’s tennis team continued their winning fashion last weekend as the eighth-ranked Blue Jays topped Ursinus in Baltimore. This win notched their tenth win of the season and their sixth straight victory.
Last weekend, as it finally started to feel like spring, the Hopkins men’s and women’s track and field teams started their outdoor season. After a very successful winter, expectations were high for both men and women at the Maryland Invitational.
This past week, the Lady Jays wrapped up their regular season against Centennial Conference opponent Franklin & Marshall. On Feb. 13 the team traveled to Lancaster, Pa. to face an opponent who had beaten them earlier in the season at home. However, this did not deter them from ending their season on a high note. The squad came out of the gates in control of the game and entered half time with a one-point lead over the Diplomats.
