A young boy, hood up, alone on the bleachers at night looks out onto the dimly-lit field. With the music paused, his ears absorb silence but his mind rings with cacophony. It is a struggle to find the will to stay another half-hour each night, and as he thinks about making his way home, his vision becomes obscured. Another scene comes to dominate his focus: the game, the game four months ahead, the game that makes every extra minute worth it.

Stepping away from trying to lose weight, let us divert some attention to those who want to put on a few pounds. Insofar as pure technique, calorie for calorie, nobody knows how to eat healthier than a bodybuilder. With carbs and protein measured to precise grams, bodybuilders have perfected not only weight training but eating to an art. Limiting the amount of food intake requires immense discipline so surely eating 5000 calories must surely be. . . well, a piece of cake.

Let's move let's move. These are wise words I once heard at a track meet back in high school. Holding to the belief that it's often better to do than to talk, below are some different levels of the same exercise routine that can be combined with lifting or taken as a whole workout routine by itself.

Oftentimes, I get drowsy. . .very, very, drowsy. During these times of profound laziness and minimal productivity, I lose motivation to climb out of bed, let alone get dressed and jog three blocks to wherever my workout would be. I'd be lying if I said I never convinced myself five more minutes turned five more hours of sleep was the way to go. I'd also be lying if I said I never made it to the gym with one bloodshot eye, did some stretches and walked back home having accomplished nothing. Sometimes, you just don't feel up to it. Luckily, there exists a rotational system of laziness and on days you feel glued to the couch, there will be someone to pull you up. Such a person is there not to make you feel better about yourself but to make you be better. With the potential to be your mentor, spotter, coach and friend, a workout buddy is a valuable asset to have. Besides making an otherwise monotonous and tedious routine more enjoyable, the logistics of having a partner are undeniable.

If you can think back a few years, what differences between your diets then and now come to mind? For many and especially myself, I always broke even. That is, I always ate just enough bad foods to cancel out the hard work that I had put in to get rid them.

Strong is when you've run out of weak. Pleasure is when you've had enough pain. Success is when you've had enough failure.

If you're a gym rat, then it just doesn't feel right to sit on your butt and not move. Needless to say, if you're a regular, you probably know who the other regulars are.

When it comes to your relationship with the gym, a funny thing happens. At least from personal experience, when I'm feeling lazy, I continue to feel lazy. When I'm on a roll with my exercise and lean foods, I continue that rate of consistent training and diet. In other words, fat begets fat and fit begets fit.

I'll be the first to admit it: I love food.

Professional opportunities, academics, exotic journeys, and odd jobs alike, it is no easy task remedying the mental stresses we young adults endure.

If there’s one thing that we love and dread at the same time, it’s carbohydrates. Just about any tasty treat you can buy in a store has carbs in it. It’s in your breakfast bagel and fruit salad, your lunch croutons and vegetables, your snack cookies and triscuits, your bland, strictly oatmeal diet and much, much more. But of course, none of this is bad; carbs play the crucial role of supplying our body with the much needed energy that fuels it during the day and more importantly, our workouts.

If one were to walk from the Rec Center to Shriver and take note of the drinks in peoples’ hands, it would be alarming just how many cups of coffee, be it from Starbucks, FFC, Pura Vida or Carma’s, are being carried around at any given point on this campus.

As spring semester of 2011 winds down, some of us will plan to spend the summer months improving our physical fitness while some of us will inevitably fall out of shape. The purpose of this fitness column is to educate and hopefully inspire readers to follow more healthy lifestyles and maybe even take their training to the next level. In this column, I would like to look at and debunk some nutritional myths, foods to eat and avoid, followed by exercise routines. Today we will look at some foods and why they are good for anyone, gym rat or not, followed by an brief overview of weight training and cardio.

Voter apathy is a perpetual problem in the United States. In the mid-term election earlier this month, only 42 percent of registered voters went to the polls. This is particularly shocking given the current societal reality.

By and large America has a culture of protecting minorities. Special interest groups, for all their faults, are necessary for the promotion of minority rights. In some cases, however, these interest groups help establish harmful laws. One such law is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) passed largely in part because of lobbyist efforts.

The argument against Park 51 is, of course, its location. It is two blocks away from Ground Zero, a site where, nine years ago, two commercial airlines flew into the World Trade Center buildings. Al Qaida, believed to be responsible for the attack, is a radical Muslim group that has been linked to terrorist activity throughout the world. The ostensible reason for committing these atrocities is the mandate within the Islamic religion to perform jihad, literally meaning “struggle.”
